I live in Southern California and live the digital lifestyle. I love technology, engage in social networks and thanks to the Amazon Kindle enjoy reading again. I listen to many podcasts and am interested in the paranormal. I don't go ghost hunting or anything like that, but I love reading, viewing and listening to a great fright!

Monday Madness
DVD's
1. Are you more likely to rent or buy DVD's (VHS's)? Why? Lately, I've been inclined to buy DVDs, because the rental period is so limited. However, since Blockbuster has ended late fees, I may change and return to renting. I haven't tried Netflix yet because I can't get past paying a monthly
fee.
2. If you rent DVD's, do you bother viewing the 'Behind the Scenes' or watching the entire movie again with commentary on? Oh I absolutely loved watching the behind the scenes. I often learn tidbits about the production of the movie or an experience certain actors had, etc. For example, in the film Dodgeball, the actor named Justin ? (sorry can't remember his last name) is repeatedly hit with the dodgeball. Was the ball real or form as my neighbor insisted? It was real and you know, you know that had to smart.
3. Do you think these features warrant the extra cost for DVD? (Afterall, we were able to buy new release VHS for $9.99 prior to DVD). Not really. I think the MPAA realized that consumers are getting wiser and we want our money's worth. If you're gonna force us to upgrade from video and you're charging us more, you'd better give us a carrot! LOL
4. What's your favorite DVD (or VHS) in:
*Drama The Deer Hunter
*Comedy Sleepless in Seattle
*Action Pirates of the Carribean
*Suspense/Thriller The Usual Suspect
*Horror Jeepers Creepers

Best Made Plans
Tonight was gals night out and the neighbors and I had planned to dine Outback and then catch a movie. As we'd pass each other throughout the day, we'd inquire of each other if we were "ready". Off we went at 4:30 p.m. and waited a mere twenty minutes for our seats.
Punky's mom was not feeling well, only no one knew this until we were seated and waiting to order. Apparently she'd eaten a slice of cake that had whipped cream and the cake had not been refrigerated. We all thought this not a problem since it was a very crisp winter day.
As the evening went on and the conversation flowed, Punky's mom made more frequent stops to the bathroom. So we abandoned our movie plans, returned home in the blustery night and went our separate ways. B. and I then went to Hollywood Video and rented Garden State, Forgotten and Ladykillers.
We watched Garden State, which I'd heard many good things about, and I really liked it. I know the film's advertised as a comedy, but I think it more a dramady. It has its comedic moments, but it's not in the genre of White Chicks, Dodgeball or Napoleon Dynamite. Since Punky's mom really wanted to see Forgotten, we let her borrow it for tonight. I sure hope she's feeling better and was able to enjoy it.

Tangram Magnetic Puzzle.
I have a thing for daily desk calendars. In 2004 I had three of them and I would view/play each one daily. It's nice to have a joke, quote, cartoon, trivia to read or puzzle to solve. This year I decided to add a magnetic puzzle calendar called Tangram. Well, this puzzle's kicking my butt! Seven out of ten times, I have to resort to viewing the solved puzzle because I can't figure it out. I must me creatively challenged or something. LOL
I should have stuck with my old faithful Scrabble calendar. That's a daily brain twister in itself and I haven't tired of playing it. I have an idea, why doesn't someone create a Boggle daily calendar. Now that would be fun. I gave my friend a Word Search calendar and she's loving it. It's always a lot more fun to play a puzzle you can solve. I'm ready to give away the Tangram!

Friday Feast
Appetizer - If you could have a free subscription to any magazine, which one would you like to have? Smart Computing, that's the geek in me.
Soup - If you were to suddenly become famous who would you choose as your stage name? I haven't a clue.
Salad - What ingredients make an awesome salad? Dressing? Croutons? Green olives, green onions, green apples and avocados.
Main Course - What do you like most about your current job? Researching. I work autonomously in many instances and I can listen to music as I do my work. It doesn't get any better than that!
Dessert - Who is your favorite instrumental musician (not a singer)? Keiko Matsui is a pianist and her performances are mesmerizing. I also adore Hilary Stagg who plays the electric harp. His music is soothing and tranquil

Just once, I'd like to be able to verbalize my doubts/fears to someone (other than B., I'm so lucky in this regard.) and have them validated. I'm a very easy going, laid back type person and this may be what causes people to respond to my doubts/fears with one liner responses like: "Oh, sometimes I think we worry too much." or "Uh, it will all work out."
Yet, when they have a concern/issue, they can speak about it for several minutes/days and there I am listening. Let me have one, it receives a one line cushion of comfort and it's like, "Okay, time to move on, let's see..." I got some very bad news at work yesterday. For several months, many of us have seen major changes that we're not thrilled about.
Well, two departments (both rather large) will be closed down by the end of February. I know its domino effect is inevitable and I'm feeling really sad and upset about it. The loss of jobs for approximately 70 people is terrible - just terrible. Especially since my intuition tells me it's the beginning of the end for more departments down the road.
I don't like feeling helpless and I don't like the sentiments the impending closure is causing. Already there's talk about who's essential and posturing and jockeying for positions. There's an air of unease and suspicion, as if I need to be looking over my shoulder all of the time.
Boop exclaimed that "I better not lose my position and have to go back to an old department. I won't leave without pointing out who's non-essential." I just blurted out, "Can't you be happy that you'll still have a job? Some people won't have that choice!" I left my cube in disgust and found solace in my PDA reading your blogs.
Thanks for reading.

Digital Camera
I love my digital camera. It's The accessory I must have with me at all times. The dilemma I have is: do I keep the battery in or out? Seriously. If I keep the battery in, it drains faster, of course, but I'm also poised to snap whenever I need to. The flip side is, keeping the battery out conserves the battery, but it also leaves me scrambling when I want to snap a photo.
Case in point: This morning at 6:30 a.m. I came upon an elderly gentleman, he must've been in his eighties. It's cold and he's at a bus stop waiting. I'm at a signal light waiting, traveling in the opposite direction. He starts doing push ups against a trash can - you know, those rotund cement-like ones. I think "hey, what a shot", but by the time I took the camera out of its case, inserted the battery, waited for it to whir - he'd already stopped.
So suggestions please. What's worked for you?

Take Me Back Tuesday
Put on those leather jackets - we're going hard this week.
So to start -
1. Name your 5 favourite hard rock artists.
- DeeLite The Groove is in Your Heart (jamming dance song)
- Right Said Fred I'm Too Sexy (many folks think Billy Idol cut this runway tune)
- Billy Ray Cyrus Achy Breaky Heart (my friend's daughter was memerized by Billy Ray and to do this day, he stills maker her heart ache!)
- Tag Team - Whoop, There it Is (I jigging)
- US3 Cantaloop (This one's a toe tapping, hip moving diddy. I dare you to remain still!)
Hmmm, guess I like to dance or groove, at the very least. Most of mine are booty shaking songs. LOL
2. Name 5 leading vocalists for any hard rock band.
- Steven Tyler Aerosmith
- Jon Bon Jovi Bon Jovi
- Sammy Hager Van Halen
- Axl Rose Guns N Roses
- Scott Weiland Velvet Revolver
3. Power Ballads. Name your three favourites.
- Imagine John Lennon
- Desperado The Eagles
- Candle in the Wind Elton John
4. Bonus question - name 3 one hit wonder hard rock bands from the 80's or 90's.
Damz, you gals are really sweatin' us big time. Don't change a thing, though. A challenge is always fun!

Auto Accident
Last night we arrived home around 8 p.m. to find emergency vehicles, hear blaring sirens and see the entire neighbordhood within a one block radius outside. Our neighbor shared, that minutes prior to our arrival home, two men were racing their trucks through the residential neighborhood. Upon striking another vehicle head on, their path now blocked, they each opted to back out of the street and flee in the night.
It appears the female passenger was not wearing her seatbelt and fire personnel took several minutes to extricate her from the car. Where she'd hit the windshield was painfully obvious and I could see she was in enormous pain. How someone can cause such devastation and simply leave is beyond me.
I found myself feeling very thankful that we were delayed or it could have easily been us. I often use the street of the accident to come home. I had no idea we had teenagers or irresponsible adults racing through the neighborhood. My thoughts and prayers are with the accident victims and their families.

Borders Arcadia, CA
After perusing this morning's newspaper and spotting an ad for the new restaurant row and Borders Books, we just had to check it out! We spent the day hanging out at the Arcadia mall (AKA Santa Anita mall) and enjoying the opening of one of our favorite restaurants - Market City Caffe. They used to be located in old town Pasadena, but left about four years ago after a kitchen fire. I've missed this restaurant and long mourned its closing.
We soaked in the California sun and had a leisurely linner (it's a cross between a late lunch and early dinner). Afterwards, we walked to Borders where I was in heaven! We bought books, yes - what a shocker. I bought a paperback by Dan Brown Digital Fortress, the Almost Famous (one of my all time favorite rock and roll related flicks) and CDs: Eurythmics Greatest Hits, The Essential Cyndi Lauper, The B52's Time Capsule (with Rock Lobster!) and The Best of the Moody Blues. I'm a sucker for CDs priced $9.99 - how can anyone refuse buying at such a bargain basement price?
We spent a lot time at Borders and it was obviously the happening place. I spent my time in the CD and DVD sections, while B. hung out in books - mostly humor and Sci-Fi. I couldn't find an empty seat in the place and most aisles had people sprawled on the floor reading and perusing magazines. I chuckled to myself as I recalled a scene from You've Got Mail when the big, bad Fox books opens and people arrive with thermos and cushion in tow to the bookstore. That's what Borders looked like! I wanted to snap a photo but was sadly too chicken.
The coup de gras came when we stopped at Target and bought Napoleon Dynamite. I've said it before and I'll say it again, this movie is destined for cult classic status and it's a flick I'll watch again and again. If you liked Shallow Hal or Dumb & Dumber or Stuck on You, you love this flick.

Burned House
Sometime in mid - December 2004 I arrived home to the flashing emergency lights of fire and police vehicles. The road was blocked and I did not venture forth. On a walk I came upon the source of the emergency, this burned out house about a half block from me. It was a very sad sight and I'm wondering what's become of its occupants.

Top Five On Friday
Taking a cue from Fallen, this week's Top Five is going to take us back
Top 5 Albums you couldn't live without when you were growing up.
- Led Zepplin's Physical Graffiti
- Elton John's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
- David Bowie's Aladdin Sane
- Marvin Gaye
- Aerosmith
- Stevie Wonder Songs from the Key of Life
- Kiss
- Angel Angel
- Black Sabbath
I know you gals asked for only five. Some artists I can't associate with one specific album, but I'd feel remiss for not listing them. Afterall, they formed the tapestry of my life at that time!

Pissed off mood and Boop got it!
Boop, my partner in crime at work, is always late for work. I'm talking 30 to 50 minutes late, each and every day. Who's got her back? I do. Who does she call for help? Me. So when I arrived at work yesterday and was greeted by stacks of boxes in my cube I was pissed! I'm an easy going, laid back person, but do not piss me off, because if you do, it's on!
So my cube is so stuffed with shit, I can barely ease into my chair and sit at my desk. From over the cube Boop shouts, "Rae sent you those boxes." Now, we never - ever - accept boxes in our cube, we have a special area for storage. So I'm wondering and seething, "WTF, why would you have them dump this shit in my cube????" Boop: "We'll get them out of your cube in awhile." Well, I'm beyond "in awhile". I'm seeing red. I'm miffed. I'm hurt. And I'm angry. Here I am always having Boop's back and she can't take care of my space? Nah.
So the morning progresses when Boop asks the magical question, "what's wrong?" Wrong thing to ask. I let her have it, when she sheepishly responded that she'd told Rae, "don't leave the boxes in her cube. She's gonna be mad and I'm gonna get into trouble." To which I added, "even more reason why you should have insisted - even blocking Rae's path if necessary - that the boxes not be left here! So don't complain and whine when I'm chewing your ass. You knew, you knew I'd be pissed, so just deal!"
"Let it ring!" Boop: "Panchita? I'll call you back. Elena's yelling at me. I'm in trouble!" I told Boop, don't never - ever - do this again or I will skewer your ass! Paybacks are sweet and your ass is mine now. Just wait. I'll bide my time. You remember that!" By the end of the day, I gave Boop her birthday gift - which she absolutely loved - and then we laughed and talked.
This morning I came into work and yelled at Boop some more. Apparently, I hadn't quite worked everything out of my system. But I'm feeling very good now! LOL

Virgin Megastore Tsunami Relief Benefit
California residents, Virgin Megastore is having a Tsunami Relief Benefit today. Go here for locations and schedules. I'm jazzed that Ozo's performing at 8:45 p.m. and I may try and catch them. I know parking will be a pain, but it'll be worth it!
I haven't read anywhere about a cover charge or admission fee. I guess, they're betting on folks giving donations and I hope you'll come out and support this cause. The toll continues to rise and since music is the universal language, what better way to raise money for the thousands of victims?

Palm PDA
My Palm PDA is my constant companion. When I received my first one back in 2000, I intended to use it strictly for calendar tracking, phone & address book and quick calculator. Well, I shortly discovered mail lists devoted to Palm users and learned about an awesome app named AvantGo.
I downloaded and installed the free app and have never been the same since! I use Avantgo to download the pages of the New York Times, Washington Post and USA Today. I also read and remain updated on several blogs this way. I type in their URL, save the entry and each time I synch, AvantGo updates my PDA with their latest articles and postings. (All blogs listed in the blogroll accompany me through my day. Thanks, folks! LOL)
Avantgo is fast. It's easy. It keeps me entertained and informed, especially when I'm waiting. I don't know what I'd do without it. It's the killer app for my Palm PDA and I'd be lonely and lost without it! This free app has made my Palm PDA indispensable - it's a serious enhancement and an app no PDA user should be without. My PDA and digital camera go everywhere with me!

Take Me Back Tuesday
Time to turn back the clock again and delve into the world of music from days gone by.
As with last week, three questions.
First - who are your five favourite duos? Go back as far as you like, or as recent as you like.
Simon and Garfunkel
The Everly Bros.
The Righteous Bros.
Sonny & Cher
Peaches & Herb
Secondly, name five Canadian musical groups or artists.
Joni Mitchell
Bryan Adams
Sarah MacLahan
Neil Young
Shania Twain
Thirdly the lyrics. This time with a twist. Match them to the artist.
"There's something about you girl....."
"What is wrong with my life, that I must....."
"I'm never gonna dance again...." Wham
"I tried to discover, a little something.."
"I'm stepping through the doorway..."
A. Wham B. INXS C David Bowie D Fine Young Cannibals E. Erasure
Damn, you gals stumped me again!

Books
So I resolved to read two books in 2005 since I successfully read two books in 2004, after and exceptionally long dry spell. Well, B. and I were talking this morning and it dawned on me that this Christmas was the year of books for me. I've received three books and have yet to start readng one!
I better get cracking on:
To Be Like Jesus by Ellen G. White
The Dirty Girls Social Club by Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez
E-Mail from God for Women by Claire Cloninger
It had been years since I had received books or magazine subscriptions as gifts. Perhaps, it's because I've made it point to share my disappointment in myself for not reading. It's like I went through a terrible long period where I couldn't concentrate or remember what I'd read. It's like having to re-read chapter one forever! Thankfully, that changed in 2004, though, how the gift givers knew, I'll never know. They don't read this blog and I haven't spoken about it.

Ten on Tuesday
Ten News Stories/Celebrities that You're Tired Of
- Michael Jackson's assertion that he's innocent in the child molestation case. This is the same person that denies having extensive plastic surgery. Obvioulsy, he thinks himself above the rest of us and believes we're total morons. Why else would he think his lies would stand for truth?
- Brad and Jen break up. They're people just like anyone else.
- Prince Harry Nazi foul up. Yea, he's had the best education class and money can afford. This doesn't guarantee he had a brain or awareness to begin with.
- All the hoopla surrounding illegal music downloads is old and not really changing things. The RIAA needs to abandon the pricing structure they've depended on and get with the times. The days of gorging music fans are long gone. We're a lot wiser now and we're not paying $15 bucks for 30 minutes of music!
- The Net is not inherently a bad place. Like anywhere or anything else, it requires the use of common sense and knowledge. If you don't have it, learn! Never - ever - give information (i.e. real name, postal address, social security number, etc.) via email or by clicking on link.
- Anna Nicole Smith's loss of seventy plus million dollars from her late husbands estate.
- J.Lo I don't want to read about, see her in a movie or hear her music for a long while. She's overexposed!
- The Verichip its assorted positive uses. I don't want to be 'chipped' - medical history be damned!
- iPod bashing. Ro, Creative, etc. - deal. Apple came out with a superior product and flawless design. You're beginning to sound like the bitter RIAA. Build a better product already.
- WMD and the inauguration.

A Day at the Beach
This afternoon we went to have "tea" at the The Tudor House in Santa Monica. I was so happy to arrive and see the sign regarding cell phone use. One too many times we've dined here, only to have our brunch/dinner interrupted by a diner talking loudly on their cell phone. We didn't want our champagne brunch ruined.
One time, other diners asked a woman to leave the room because she was talking so loud. Of course, she refused and proceeded to speak for ten minutes, disrupting everyone else. I always turn off my phone (on the rare occasion that it's on) and if it should ring, I promptly press the answer and continue exiting the room before speaking.
We had a great day at the beach and it was wonderful to see so many people out and about. After having 15 days of rain, it looked like everyone had cabin fever and couldn't wait to get out! LOL People were strolling, dining in the patio seating of various restaurants, sipping cold coffee drinks, basking in the sun and cycling. We sat for 45 minutes in the sun and just talked. I feel rejuvenated, of course, it could have to do with buying Joni Mitchell's Dreamland and Jill Scott's Beautifully Human CDs.
Joni Mitchell's 2000 remake of Both Sides is so hauntingly beautiful, especially with Mitchell's deep, sultry voice, this alone made it worth buying the whole CD. I listen to her lyrics and sometimes feel sad, other times ambivalent, and sometimes I'm simply lost. Music is timeless indeed!

Radio Reception
I can't get radio reception in my cubicle because of the reinforced walls and electrical equipment. We can't surf Internet radio because of the company firewall. It's banned. So Boop and I are left listening to our limited collection of CDs and that gets tiring real quick. Especially since a lot of her music's in Spanish. I can go that route for only so long! LOL
I've tried listening to music on my headphones, but then Boop starts yammering and gets upset when she's left talking to herself. So I got to thinking...what if I bought a hard drive MP3 Player that allowed external speakers to be attached? Then I could have an unlimited playlist and we'd never hear the same song twice within a year's time. It would also be enough capacity to rotate several genres. Has anyone tried this solution and, if so, any advice?

Apple iPod Shuffle
I am totally - totally - jazzed and fired up over Apple's new iPod Shuffle MP3 player. It's Apple's first flash drive offering and it's going head to head with Rio, Creative and RCA. The iPod Shuffle retails for $99 for 512K meg (120 songs) or $149 for one gig (240 songs).
I am excited, because this means price wars folks and this is a very good thing for us consumers. You know I've been straddling the fence for some time about which MP3 Player to buy. I've made no bones about wanting a small, compact flash drive model, as well as a large capacity hard drive model. I believe the iPod Shuffle's gonna do it for me.
The only criticism I have about it is: there's no external memory expansion (a la SD card) and the battery is again, a rechargeable type. At least with Rio and the others, most use standard AA batteries (readily available anywhere) and they offer easy expansion. I can carry multiple playlists on a postage sized one gig SD card for easy and convenient switching. Hopefully, future incarnations will offer expansion.
In the meantime, I'm going to bide my time and let the early adopters work out any kinks and bugs. I'll also be watching the MP3 Flash drive players and scoping prices and offers. I'll ultimately make my purchase in late March or early April, just in time for my birthday! Regardless of which brand I buy, Apple's introduction is a win-win situation for the consumer and I love it! LOL

LOL

U2
Listening to U2's new release How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb while at work and finding this CD remarkable. I think it's the first CD in years that heralds back to their early CDs. It's edgy, has wonderful lyrics and is back to their rock roots. I haven't found a cut that I don't like. It's a very welcome surprise and I hope folks will support the artist by buying the CD in whole. Otherwise, you'll end up paying more at $.99 for eleven songs.
I haven't gravitated to paying for downloads yet. I like the cover art, lyric inserts and anecdotal information. Yea, it may seem lame to you, but that's moi! I also desire the best quality possible. Whether it's AAC, MP3 at 128k or 384k bit, etc., the quality does not equal a professionally burned CD. I'd rather buy the disc and rip the tunes to my MP3 Player or create a compilation CD of various artists. How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb is solid and Circuit City's been selling it for $9.99!

I've started a blogroll and, of course, it's alphabetized - I'm anal that way! Besides, it makes it much easier to find a blog or remember where you left off, when you're checking out different ones. I debated about removing the meme links, but I like turning readers on to memes and giving linky love to the memes I play. Lord, knows these folks deserve it for their commitment, hard work and time. Linky love is the least that I can do.
BTW, there's a grand new music meme that plays on Tuesday and Friday and the gals behind it are bona-fide music fiends. So, if you're looking to be challenged and possibly caused to have brain farts, check it out. These chicks know their stuff and they leave me in the dust any day! LOL I also like that the site has general tidbits of information relating to music, so it's a must check on non-meme days.
Okay, here are my very late answers to:
Top Five on Friday
Top Five Albums People Wouldn't Believe You Own (Guilty Pleasures)
- Yanni ugh, yes - I have Yanni...like four of his early CDs. Besides his gorgeous long locks and good lucks, I liked his hypnotic synthesized tunes.
- John Denver's Greatest Hits Yes, I never thought I'd admit this in public, but I do like John Denver and the images of nature and freedom he conjures. I was truly devastated when his plane crashed off the California coastline. Hey, you can't fault me for dreaming.
- Richard Marx remember him? He released three albums (two of which I own), but gained fame for his catchy show and commercial jingles.
- Hiroshima
- Kitaro
There you have it...I'm guilty....flog me now. Can I play next week, or have I been banned?

Take Me Back Tuesday
Ahh Tuesday. The day of the week that I will ask you to turn back the clock and try and remember music from days gone by.
1. Name 5 One Hit Wonders from the 80's.
Darn, I thought this was supposed to be easy....the eighties, huh.
- Cars by Gary Numan
- Somebody's Watching Me by Rockwell
- She Blinded Me with Science by Thomas Dolby
- Breakout by Swing Out Sister
- Word Up by Cameo
Incomplete entries:
- What was the tune from Men at Work?
- Who sang The Double Dutch Bus?
2. Finish the lyrics:
"Looking for my lost shaker of salt, some people claim......"
"Hush Hush, keep it down now...."
"Johnnie plays guitar, Jennie plays bass, name of the band is the human race..."
"Let's Dance...put on your red shoes...." and dance the blues. David Bowie. Finally, I know one.
"Daddy daddy you know you're still number one...."
3. What type of dancing is the Robot? Hmmm, your movements are very slow, purposeful and methodical like a....robot. You like you have a pole stuck up your butt and can barely move! Even have the squishy faced expression. LOL

Inclement Weather
We've been experiencing our share of bad weather in So Cal and for some folks in Ventura County, the rain literally collapsed a hillside. I've been watching news coverage and praying for these poor folks to find their loved ones. So far, three are confirmed dead and an undetermined number missing. Authorities estimate that approximately 12 - 15 houses were crushed and totally destroyed by the slide.
