Ponderings

So I took a train ride up to Hollywood today because the Oscars have ended and I figured I could actually walk around a little, maybe snap a few photos, enjoy the sunlight and chill. Afterall, most of the tourists should be gone by now or hitting the attractions besides Hollywood.

Sure enough, the barricades were coming down along with the lighting and scaffolding. The train ride there and back was interesting because I noticed how many people were lost in their own world, heads bobbing, feet tapping and some hands strumming. I wondered what kind of music they were listening to and if I'd like it or recognize the artist.

Then I read another interesting and exciting article about iPod DJing, the act of hooking up one's iPod to a club's system and playing tunes from their iPod for everyone to hear. The first time I read about this was an article in the New York Times. I'm intrigued by this and wonder if anyone frequents a club where they do this? I would think I have a club or coffeehouse in the L.A. area that's doing it. We're usually on the cutting edge. I just have to find it so I can check it out. I think it would be a total blast and a fantastic way to be turned on to new music.

Every where I go, folks have headphones or ear buds and they're lost in their tunes!

A rarity, the rail car of the Goldline is pretty empty. It's usually quite difficult to capture a shot of the cab!

No Rain!

It's finally stopped raining and I couldn't wait to go out during lunch, sporting my MP3 player, and take a train ride through L.A. I hopped a the Gold line only to discover that portions of it were running single track due to land slides and mud on the tracks. I have to say, the time passed very efficiently and quickly as I bobbed to Parliament Funkadelic's Flashlight, George Harrison's Material World, Janis Joplin's Piece of my Heart, Queen's Under Pressure, Erasure's Victim of Love, John Legend's Get Lifted, etc., before I knew it, I was oblivious to where I was!

I also noticed that most riders had headphones, newspapers or were sleeping. I was suddenly enveloped by sadness, because I realized we were opting to remain disconnected. By having our attention diverted, we didn't risk eye contact, interaction or even acknowledgement. It was a bizarre epiphany and I considered removing my buds, until I realized how much I was enjoying the variety of music.

Having a compact, unobtrusive, light weight device that stored a lot of music is what I'd wanted for months. Here I now had it and I was feeling sad. What's that all about? I immediately shifted my thinking and focused on how much I love music, how so many songs have meaning for me and how empty my life would be without it. I felt great being outdoors and dry.

MP3 Player

Yahooooo! Okay so, not being one to be stymied by something as simple as a store not having my item, I phoned the Burbank Fry's first thing this morning. God was with me. I was assisted by a nice, patient and helpful guy who checked the shelf for product (the computer claimed they had three) and found only one. He then offered to put it on hold for me, taking my name and number and told me to go to any cash register for will call. Hey, a little tenacity and creativity paid off.

During lunch I drove from L.A. to Burbank in a torrential downpour and was rewarded with the Creative Muvo C100, replete with $20 mail-in rebate! I tried to contain my enthusiasm, but had to call B. at work and share the fantastic news. B. was surprisingly calm and wasn't too pleased with my impromptu decision. I traversed the wilds of urban driving in a downpour just fine and you'd think I'd get a little credit, but no. Instead, I received a spanking and well, that wasn't too bad! LOL I'm off to transfer mp3's and play!

Take Me Back Tuesday
Sock it to you on Tuesday? Elena, Elena, Elena...don't you know I am easily amused into making things difficult?

However, this week won't be difficult.

1. Name 5 female artists you admire.
Carly Simon, Norah Jones, Jill Scott, India Arie, Erykah Badau

2. Name three female artists you wish would just go away.
J. Lo, Mariah Carey, Cher

3. If you could tour with any female artist - who would it be?
Madonna, of course. Who else would expose me to some of the darkest and sexiest recesses of music and live performance! LOL

I'll be damned. Fallen took pity on my whiny ass and gave us a big time break. This is the first and probably only Tuesday, when I didn't have to rack my brain and ponder. Bring it on, sister! I know you're baiting me and waiting in the wings. LOL

The view from car window as I drove through a downpour. Don't worry, I pulled off to the side of the road. Sunshine, we need sunshine!

Rain Related Delay

Rain, rain and more rain. My garage is now so soaked, it's depressing. I know we have major clean up in the spring and many damaged and ruined articles. What's done is done, right? B's been upset and worried about it for three days, but there's really nothing to be done until this rain stops. We've sandbagged as best we can and it's not helping. B. thinks the leak is coming from above, rather than below where we sandbagged. This would certainly explain how the water entered! Does anyone know of a sealant we can apply?

It was a good day today, despite the on/off downpour. Let's see, we were a skeletal crew due to the holiday and I got a lot of work done. At least, I feel very satisfied with my productivity! LOL It was quiet and I listened to Joe Satriani Is there Love in Space, Kanye West College Dropout, Carly Simon's Greatest Hits and John Legend Get Gifted, a good mix of music and genres that entertained me quite well.

After work, I drove to Fry's to ..... [drumroll, please] .... buy my MP3 Player. Yea, remember B. didn't think I'd do it. The bet was that I wouldn't have one by my birthday in April. Well, after perusing Fry's Friday ad for the fifth and sixth time, I spotted the Creative Muvo 256 meg MP3 player with SD expandability for $79.99 less a $20 mail-in rebate. I checked amazon.com for buyers feedback and it was positive. I figure I can't go wrong at this price and I've sure waited patiently.

Well, the surprise was on me; Fry's had sold out of the Muvo since Saturday, so I received a raincheck, which will allow me to purchase it at $79.95 but sans the $20 mail-in rebate. The offer wil have ended by then. B. always tells me that if I didn't have bad luck, I'd have no luck at all! So, I'm without a MP3 player, still. LOL

A two mile portion of freeway flooded, causing the closure of the two left lanes. Even though it was a holiday today, the closure caused quite a back up!

I love the look of this restaurant's patio section. The chairs and umbrellas are missing due to the inclement weather.

Bunco Night

Last night was our neighbor's Bunco Night and they needed two subs, so we gladly obliged. The rain was really coming down before our neighbor picked us up and we were already questioning our decision to attend. We were all snuggled and dry at home and thought ourselves crazy for going out in such horrible weather.

Of course, once there, we had a great time. Our host was very nice and had a festive set up with delicious food, candy treats, cake and great company. Game play started an hour or so later and the laughter and cheering could be heard by the neighbors!

This group does a gift a exchange at the end of the evening, so no one leaves empty handed. We all left with a gift in hand and feeling like a winner. The gift exchange price cap is supposed to be $5, but there's no way anyone adhered to it! A lot of thought and giving goes into to the gifts and I know I had fun picking my gift items for the exchange.

1. What one song or melody can make you smile even when you're having a rotten day? Any music in general. Even the one's that can lull me to sleep, brighten me up just before the lull. Music has always been an important part of my life. From my earliest memories, I can hear music and have associations with music.

2. What are your plans for the day? How much of it do you think you'll actually accomplish? I have no plans today. I'm going to hang out and relax. We have another torrential downpour, it thundered and rained all night and I'm staying off the road and watching movies. I have quite a view choices, too:
The Notebook
Troy
Fried Green Tomatoes
Missing Helen
Saw

3. What television show do you most enjoy watching when you're all alone and can devote your complete attention to it? Forensic Files or Cold Case Files, yea - I'm a crime nut. I never worked out the part of me that wanted to be a police investigator.

4. What was the last thing you remember arguing with someone about? The medicinal uses for a variety of plants.

5. What is your most aggravating public experience with a cell-phone user? The noise in my environment drowns out my voice and the other person can't hear me. Therefore, I have to shout or speak very loudly.

On a rainy morning, nothing quenches my thirst, warms me inside and outside and is as satisfying as a hot vanilla latte from the Coffee, Bean & Tea Leaf and a poppy seed muffin from Mrs. Beasley's.

Top Five On Friday
Top 5 Songs That Can Put You To Sleep
(Interpret as you see fit, this could be songs that act like lullabies, songs that are boring or just songs that relax you)

- Concertos (any concerto)
- Pavorati
- Baroque music
- The Way We Were Barbara Streisand
- Kitaro

I have CDs by these artists', as well as a collection of Baroque music, all of which put me to sleep. The song doesn't matter, it all blends and blurs and before I know it, I'm lulled to sleep. I'm pathetic, I know.

The rain's back and I'm always amazed when I see cyclist riding their bikes in the rain. As a motorist, I think the slick roads are hazardous enough for drivers. I would never - ever - venture forth in the rain on a bicycle. I'd be too chicken. I'd succumb and take public transportation. This guy must have nerves of steel to cycle through car loving Los Angeles.

Life

The meterologists have been predicting rain since last Saturday and it finally arrived. We exited the theater to see folks arriving with wet umbrellas and the sound of tires screeching on the wet asphalt. I'm glad the rain arrived in the evening and all we had left to do was pick up our car from the mechanic. Both cars are due for smog checks this year and we wanted to get a jump on taking care of it. They're both passed and ready to receive their stickers and registration.

Today we saw Sideways which I really enjoyed. I loved the dysfuncitonality of the two main characters and their interaction with the women they met. There were no action scenes or explosions. This film is about relationships and the dynamics each individual contributed. A great movie and one I'd consider buying. It really left me thinking.

Feeling good and not very tired, we then snuck into Million Dollar Baby, a film we'd wanted to see for sometime. The lighting in this film is very dark and it creates the grimy and gritty reality of the boxing world. I had not read reviews of this film and was unsure what it was about. The boxing scenes are very graphic and I wouldn't suggest taking children to view it. I know it's not rated for children, but how many adults without sitters, still opt to take their child?

This is a very heavy film that brings into focus one's right to self determination. At what point does the medical community release a patient? When does a patient have the right to determine what is quality of life? It's a captivating film and I clearly understand why it's been nominated. After seeing Million Dollar Baby and Ray, I feel Million Dollar Baby should receive the Oscar. We'll see soon enough.

Hitch

We made it to the movies today and saw Hitch. It's a lighthearted romantic comedy that delivers and doesn't disappoint. The cinematography is gorgeous and captures the pulse of NYC. We bought a pizza earlier in the day and then wrapped it in aluminum foil and snacked to our delight! LOL

I have a cousin who's favorite sneak in snack is hot dogs. They're messy and require packets of condiments, which potentially can be a real mess if they squish open in your purse. Eeow! Being that this was our first snack sneak in, we were jazzed with our choice and very comfortable eating it in our seats. It was nice that the theater wasn't crowded and we had no one seated behind us to talk or kick our seats during the movie.

Well I've said it before and I'm saying it again, the best made plans don't always pan out. LOL We did some minor shopping before going to dinner last night and made our reservation on time. Even the parking Goddess was with us and we breezed into the restaurant. We were pleasantly surprised to be seated in a booth near the cellist and violinist and so the ambiance was quite soothing and romantic. We had a very sumptuous meal and were able to dine at our leisure, without being watched or stared at by hungry diners! LOL

Our tummies stuffed, we then could not agree on what we wanted to do. We had checked the movie times and knew what was playing, but couldn't decide. The mall in general beckoned B. and the Borders me. We finally agreed to walk off some of our meal and promptly lost time and ourselves in the mall. We'll have to catch flicks Wednesday night! LOL

Today I bought two DVDs Saw and Raging Bull and Kanye West's The College Dropout CD. We had to wait for the store to unpack the DVDs and while waiting, I promptly made a beeline to the CD section. It's not good to give me leeway at Circuit City. Spouse was at the mechanics, so I was in heaven and running amok! LOL

In anticipation of more rain, the garage has been sandbag. We have a pretty bad leak in the rear and with all the rain we've been having, it's made a mess in the garage. Little Girl loves retreating to the garage during cold or wet weather and she's been very vocal about her discontent with the damp conditions. We're hopeful that the sandbags will stave off anymore water problems.

So today's the day that lovers and couples gladly ring in and singles lament. Whatever side of the spectrum you happen to fall in, I hope you're having a great day and an even livlier night! For us, it's an early dinner (you know the restaurants are going to be jam packed and booked) at 5:30 p.m. We have our reservations made and we're catching a movie afterward. We don't yet know what we're watching, as it depends on what time we finish dining and what's playing closest to said time!

The four films in consideration are: Hitch, Are we there yet?, The Boogeyman and In Good Company. Yea, we're all over the place; romantic comedy, to horror, to childrens comedy, to comedy. Well then, maybe we're not all over, the theme seems to be comedy. So, we'll see which one we view and I'll fill ya'll in tomorrow. In the meantime, if you're inclined to look at bizarre Valentine Cards from days past, my hope these will amuse you.

Has anyone gone the online route this year? I was reading an article in the NYT that talked about a surge in subscriptions during the months of January and February for online dating sites. I've never tried them, I've been in my relationship for twenty plus years - hell, online dating didn't exist! - but I'm curious about the whole experience. If you've tried it this year for the first time or in the past, please share your observations and experience.

Community Angels Visit Alhambra

Flower Power Angel

Back in 2001 angels graced our community. I was so excited when they arrived and eagerly snapped away. I had no idea if they'd be seen by others. I recently came upon them and would like to share them with you over the next several days.

Valentine's Celebrations

So we're celebrating Valentine's Day with the neighbors today. You know the drill, Monday will be jam packed with couples like us, long wait, possibly poor service and cold food and movie theaters bursting. B. and I will be in this mix on Monday, but for today, we're dining with our neighbors at a great BBQ joint in Chino. They're the ones that turned us on to it. If everyone's feeling well and in the mood, maybe will catch a flick, too.

Isn't it a challenge trying to coordinate an outing and get everyone on the same page? Everyone can leave at 5:30 p.m. save for one person. The majority want to see movie A, save for one person who can't stand so-so's acting or doesn't like horror flicks. In the end, it's usually worth it, but when it's not, I wanna kick myself and know why I continue placing myself in these situations.

I'm anxiously awaiting the release of Saw next Tuesday. This is a psychological thriller that I saw in the theater and really enjoyed. It's about two men who awaken to find themselves shackled in a large, vacant, sterile room. They don't know each other, why they're there, how they got there, or why they're there together. Between them they have: a key, a saw and each has an audiocassette and one cassette player between them to hear the tape. They must figure out how to escape using only these items. It's suspenseful and intricate and, IMHO, a must see.

Films

I can't tell you how easily I ignored and became oblivious to the MPAA's ads in theaters featuring props people, etc. who are just like me and don't want me to jeopardize their jobs with film piracy. Of course, the mere fact that they assume I'm a thief to begin with, doesn't endear them to me or make me feel empathy for them. I have neither the time nor desire to copy DVDs or surreptishiously copy the film as I sit in the theater holding a jiggling camcorder. However, you also will not hear me admonishing others not to do so, especially after being treated the way I have been by the MPAA. I shouldn't have to sit through an insulting commercial after paying $10 for a movie ticket.

Have you noticed the latest trend? Catch it early, folks, new DVD releases are sold for an average of $15 on release Tuesday and/or the first week of release. Thereafter, the MPAA is up to its old tricks, the DVD skyrockets to an average $19.99 and as high as $21.99. I'm not paying $19.99 for a DVD, I don't care how much like it. Just one year ago, early 2004, even the new releases could be found for $15 months after release. The industry did this with video releases and now that they feel consumers are enthralled by the DVD's extra features, they figure we're suckers for spending a minimum $4 more per DVD. Sometimes, it's as much as $6.

Wake up and answer them with your money - hang onto it! Once DVD sales begin to wane, they'll have to lower the prices to entice us to buy. Many of us are skilled in this technique, especially during holiday sales. Who says it's effective only during the holidays? Use it year round, people. Another thing I resent is having to wade through commercials for upcoming DVD releases or new film releases. Disney, in particular, is notorious for not allowing folks to skip past them or return to the
menu.

Top Five On Friday
It's going to be Valentine's day soon, so this week's Top 5 has a special theme, and an extra bit, if you feel so disposed to participate.

Top Five Love Songs

- I'm in You Peter Frampton
- Your Song Elton John
- Shining Star The Manhattans
- Biggest Part of Me Ambrosia
- You are so Beautiful Joe Cocker

and
Top Five Love Songs You Hate.

Unfortunately, I can't think of one love that I don't like...no, wait....perhaps, the real issue is, since I don't like the artists, I can't remember the names of songs. So, the love songs I don't like would be by these artists: Celine Dion, Shania Twain, Britney Spears, Barry Manilow, and Christina Aguilera.

Leaf Angel
3x Thursday:: Valentine's Day

1. Do you like Valentine's Day at all? Why/Why not? Yes I do. I like it a lot and look forward to it. Although, I think there should be a Valentine's Day each week. It shouldn't be an annual occurence.

2. Are you single this V-Day, or do you get to share it with someone? I have B. to share it with and I'm very thankful for this. We have our reservations made and our evening planned.

3. How come we only have one day a year to celebrate our love for someone? Do you think that's fair? Why/Why not? See question one. I must say that we we're very respectful of each other and don't go to bed angry or take each other for granted. We start each day with an "I love you" and end each day the same. It's worked for our 24 plus years.

Bonus Question for Comments: If you had to recieve a gift for V-Day, which would it be: A dozen roses and a diamond ring, or a brand new puter? Why/Why not? Oooooh, this is a loaded question....a new notebook with an iPod. Yea, I got greedy....the geek in me went into overload! LOL I'll get more use and enjoyment out of a computer and MP3 player then I would diamonds or roses. An iPod's got bling anyway!

The State of Music

Listening to GNR's rendition of Knockin' on Heavens Door, it kicks serious ass and is a vast improvement over Clapton's. OF course, Welcome to the Jungle is a rock anthem that belongs in the hall of fame. Also listened to Dave Matthews and a little Cream (anyone remember them?). I haven't seen the ad yet, thank God. The RIAA has created a mascot to help fight music piracy and "increase awareness of copyright holder's rights". I don't think it's going to do much in the way of touching today's youth. If anything, they're going to end up pissing off more people.

I can tell you that the reason I'm buying more music is because the prices have come down and CDs have more than sixty minutes of music. Back in the day when ignorance was bliss for the RIAA, I'd pay $15 for a scant 10 song thirty minute CD. Now, there's no way in hell! First, it better cost no more than $9.99 and it damn better hit the sixty minute mark. RIAA, you got fat and greedy for a solid 15 years, the rides over. Stop bitching and come up with more features to enchance and encourage CD sales - it's in the packaging, baby!

Name three (or more!) people and the custom ringtones you’ve either set for them on your phone, or would if you could.

I’m going to be an over-achiever in my answer:

Geoffrey - In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel

Lyse - Margaritaville by Jimmy Buffett

Karel - Don’t Don’t Tell Me No by Sophie B. Hawkins

Brenda - Haven’t We Been Here Before by Styx

Elder demonspawn - Annie’s Song by John Denver (obviously!)

Younger demonspawn - Anxiety by Pat Benatar (of course!)

Molly - The Mummers’ Dance by Loreena McKennitt or Black Leather Band by Bedlam Bards

Mari - anything by Heather Alexander

Any ex - Since You’ve Been Gone by Kelly Clarkson

Listen, my cell phone is so old, it doesn't text message, snap photos, vibrate or allow downloading of ringtones. If I could get ringtones, I'd get:

Like A Virgin - Madonna

Wake Me Up (Before you Go - Go) Wham

In Da Club 50 Cent

It's Gettin Hot in Here Nellie

Take Me Back Tuesday

What were they thinking? When they were in the band, they were amazing. Now they left - and they have solo records.

In this case Sammy Hagar doesn't count. He had solo projects before he ever joined Van Halen.

That being said, list at least 5 band members who left their bands to pursue solo projects.

- Ron Wood

- Eric Clapton

- Michael MacDonald

- Michael Jackson

- Joe Walsh

List 3 frontmen who made less than successful solo efforts. You can use names from above but try not to overlap.

- Mick Jagger (he returned real quick, though. LOL)

- David Lee Roth (he left to become a lounge singer in Vegas)

- Donny Osmond

List 3 groups made up of members that have reformed from other groups.

- Southern Pacific

- Velvet Revolver

- The Commodores

TV Tuesday

This week, we turn our attention to...the Super Bowl.

1. How much of this year's Super Bowl did you watch? Do you watch any of the pre-game hype? For the first time in years I watched the whole thing. Our friend had a party and it was a lot of fun, great comaraderie and lots of competition. LOL My team lost, but not without a darned good fight!

2. What was your favorite commercial during the Super Bowl? Least favorite? My favorite was the trailer for War of the Worlds. This is a must see movie for us. Least favorite....the Budweiser ones weren't up to speed. They've been a lot better in the past. The Go Daddy spot was funny and got pulled from the rotation. It was to re-air during the fourth quarter.

3. Did you like the half-time show? Yea, I guess. I'm not a big McCartney fan, though, I loved the Beatles. The lighting effects were grand.

4. What's your favorite food to eat while watching the Super Bowl? Nachos. Of course, we had way too much food and a five layer dip was one of them. I was in nacho heaven!

~ BONUS ~ A lot has been made over the years about the post-Super Bowl slot to highlight or launch TV shows. It was the post-Super Bowl spot that brought us the A-Team and the Wonder Years. Do you stay up to watch the post-Super Bowl shows? What is the most memorable post-Super Bowl show you've seen? None, we've never watched a post show. We were all tired and I had Shaun of the Dead waiting for my attention. It's a Brit flick parodying Dawn of the Dead. They do a darn good job and it's quite funny.

Norwegian Court's Ruling

A Norwegian student who ran a website which linked to downloadable MP3 files has been ordered to pay compensation by the country's Supreme Court.

This is incomprehensible to me. Read the story and see if you don't find it absurd. This guy was linking to sites offering MP3 downloads. He wasn't serving them. He wasn't emailing songs upon request. He wasn't compiling the music into a CD and then selling or trading them. He was only linking to other sites that served MP3s.

Isn't this the main purpose of the WWW? We talk about something and we link to it. Just as I'm linking to the BBC story. This doesn't mean I'm advocating anything. I am linking to something that I've found interesting and wish to share with you. The RIAA and its cohorts have really gone to the extreme this time. Now, we're not free to link to other sites without fear of repercussion.

Instead of the recording industry and music organizations/associations expending energy on stuff like this, they should be studying why iTunes is such a hit and focus their combined energy on emulating and improving it. They're going to legislate, prosecute and alienate the very people they need to fill their coffers!

I've opened a computer on several occasions: to add memory, install a CDRW, install a second hard drive, etc. Each time, I've taken a photo of the area I'm working on, just in case something goes wrong. Nothing clearly illustrates the before and after like a photo.

A Day in My Life

Today's been a day for discarding a weeks worth of newspapers (this is precisely why I don't like subscribing), emptying QVC boxes and organizing CDs and DVDs. You know the routine, remove a DVD to watch and it remains in the player until the next viewing and the box on the TV or coffee table.

We're getting ready to go to a Super Bowl party. I'm rooting for the Eagles, yea I know the odds are against me, but I don't care. I'm supporting the underdog. From what I know, we're having hot dogs, nachos, ribs, chips and plenty of soda. Thankfully, this crowd isn't into drinking a lot.

Oh yes, I'm reminded that someone's made a homemade Super Bowl cake. LOL Let's see, it's almost like a national holiday or something, isn't it? Next thing you know, they'll be selling outdoor lights in the shape of football helmets representing every team. And, of course, we'll have to buy some and light them up in January! Hmmm. would this be a strand of 50 or 100 lights? Anyone know off the top of your head?

That's it for now. Everybody have a raucous, fun and safe celebration. See ya later!

Gas prices are rising in So Cal. I sure enjoyed the $1.83 prices a month ago. If only it would last or continue lowering. Look at that view: snowcapped mountains in the background and palm trees in the foreground.

Chinatown in Los Angeles

Chinese New Year is almost upon us and this is the year of The Rooster. Hopefully, I'll have some shots of the colorful and spectacular New Years Parade later this month.

Yea, I'm little late this week for reasons unknown to me. This is one of my favorite memes and I couldn't see not answering it. I wait for Tuesday and Friday, so apologies said and hopefully, accepted. Let's move forward:

Take Me Back Tuesday

This week - Get Dancin' (An Elena Inspired Meme for the week)

1. Name 5 songs that you can't sit through without dancing. Dancing in your chair counts.

- Everybody Madonna

- More, More, More The Andrea True Connection

- Cantaloop US3

- Play that Funky Music Wild Cherry

- What'd I Say Ray Charles

2. Name 5 songs that never fail to run you off a dance floor - or make you change the station.

- Any Celine Dion

- Mandy Barry Manilow

- Any Barbara Streisand

- Any Brittny Spears

- The Striptease song (Come on now, don't act like you don't know what I'm talking about. Don't even try!)

3. What is your signature song? Girls Just want to have Fun Cyndi Lauper (It would've been #1 in question one, but I didn't want to repeat! LOL
