Southern California Winter

It's dead winter is So. Cal., but you wouldn't know it from cyclists, walkers and sun bathers outdoors. They're soaking up the sunlight and mild heat on a gorgeous winter day!
Seven Pet Peeves

I found myself daydreaming at work and thinking of things that irk me. Deciding to go with the flow, this is what I came up with:

~ People talking to me when I'm wearing ear buds in a public space
~ Driver's chatting on the cell phone as they're driving
~ Attending a birthday luncheon and someone doesn't have their portion
~ Waiting at the cashier behind a check writer who has not filled in the date, signature, phone number, etc.
~ Patiently waiting for a parking space and having it stolen by someone approaching from the opposite end
~ Smoker's exhaling their last drag after the elevator door closes
~ People who say: "Oh yea, I seen Michael at the market the other day." Or, "We seen that movie on DVD."

Random Ten
10 songs that sum up your weekend...or were on your weekend playlist...and one picture that relates back. (oh, and if you feel like it, tell us why you picked the songs you did)

~ The Shapes Dreaming of an M16
~ Guitarshop Assholes Topless Girls
~ Griddle Hit Parade
~ Natives of the New Dawn People
~ Dread Daze Love Life
~ Hitchhiker Summer Feeling
~ The Muffs Famous
~ Adrina Thorpe Fly, Fly, Fly
~ Away with Faeries Space Rocks keep Falling on My head
~ Robin Banks Someone to Talk to

All of these songs are by indie artists that I like and enjoy. Most are trying to sell their music via iTunes, with varying success. I was in an indie mood this weekend, unwilling to conform to anything!

The male driver of a ginormous SUV, didn't help my mood any, when he continued leaning on his horn each time the light turned green. The poor driver in front of this dumb bastard, had no time to remove their foot from the brake to the pedal before receiving the blast!

A Day in My Life

My Mom and I had lunch at Lucille's BBQ, Long Beach, CA. It was a sunny but crisp winter's day and we took our time eating and talking. My goal in 2006 is to "do lunch" at a new place once a month. Lucille's isn't new to us, but we hadn't been back since 2003! I now find another BBQ joint much more tastier, so Mom's in for a surprise in a couple of weeks! LOL

Detailing

I guess any place is as good as another when it comes to auto detailing. These guys are detailing the black SUV in the parking lot of a Ralph's market. I wonder if the SUV owner knows this or believes his auto is in a business or auto garage?
Have I shared my ghost story?

Boo and I are convinced that we have a ghost in our home. It's a benevelont ghost who likes attention. I say this because our ghost is prone to changing the cable channel when it wants and, if that doesn't grab us, we're sort of jaded now, it takes to knocking things off counter tops.

The first time it happened I was alone and didn't feel scared. I figured something in the air caused the channel to change. The next time it happened, Boo was sitting alone and Buddah and I were nearby. Suddenly Boo exclaimed, "Hey, what happened!?" and again we wrote it off to frequencies in the air.

It then happened when we were together, side by side, with Buddah in plain sight. Again the channel changed, as if someone had pressed the individual buttons, because there is no static between switching. This time we took notice, sitting erect and staring at each other. Neither of us felt afraid or as if something something was bad.

We laughed a little nervously as we changed back to the channel of our desire. Buddah has never given any indication of sensing another presence. Animals are very perceptive and in tune with their environment, so we felt relieved when Buddah was comfortably snuggled and slept right through.

The random channel changing has continued over the months. It then changed to items (never breakable) miraculously leaping off the entertainment center or countertop. The items falling are not near fans, Buddah is in plain sight nowhere near the item, the floor is still, so it's not like a reaction to vibration. Again, we've just accepted it. We've lived in this house thirteen years.

What has changed is my feeling about it. About a month ago, we had just turned in for the night. I admit that I was exhausted. Buddah was already sound asleep in bed and Boo had just joined us. We kissed goodnight and I remember lying on my back facing the ceiling. Boo was facing a side wall.

I heard water running. Not a drip. But the water in the bathroom sink like someone was washing their hands. I thought to turn to Boo, but when I tried, I couldn't move. Everything was in slow motion. Turning my head took all of my strength and I remember forcing myself to focus on the clock: seven minutes had passed since we said goodnight.

Boo was already snoring and I couldn't move. That's when it happened. I was gripped by fear. I felt like something bad or someone mean was in my presence and I prayed. That's all I could do. I tried but couldn't get out of bed. I wanted to see what or who was in my bathroom running the water.

Exhausted, I fell back to sleep mid-prayer and when I awoke the next morning, I prayed again. Boo was already awake and I asked how everything was - I guess I half expected mention of the bathroom sink being wet or something. Nothing. Boo had slept well, no problem. All was right.

So now what I've noticed is that the living room doorway leading to the hallway, which connects to the master bedroom and barthroom, seems to have activity. I know, I know it sounds bizarre, but that's how it is. I sense movement and at times, swear that I see something in my peripheral vision. The minute I turn, it ceases. I don't feel the fear that I experienced that night, though - which is totally a good thing.

Tuesday night Boo was surfing the Net in the dining room, it's adjacent to the living room where I was watching TV. At least five times I swear I saw - I don't know....a film-like thing....it's translucent like a jelly fish, but I can see it out the corner of my eye. It scurries like a raccoon or something crouched. I can't explain it and I know it sounds weird.

I felt so foolish, so I said nothing to Boo. I have mentioned to Boo that I sometimes feel something, but how do I qualify something?

Hence, I feel ridiculously foolish. I'm not afraid to come home, again I still feel safe. However, I do find items missing. Items that I can't understand where they could have possibly gone off to.

Top 5 On Friday
Top 5 "Classic Rock" Bands (and your favorite song by each if you feel so disposed)

Led Zepplin The Song Remains the Same
The Beatles In My Life
Kiss Rock and Roll All Night
Queen Bohemian Rhapsody
Black Sabbath Sabbath Bloody Sabbath

David Bowie Panic in Detroit
Alice Cooper Billion Dollar Baby
Elton John Funeral for a Friend and All the Young Girls Love Alice
Peter Frampton Do You Feel Like I Do?
Marc Bolan Jeepster

Now you've struck a nerve. The seventies, which is what I consider classic rock, had some of the best bands/artists ever. It was hard to narrow to five in each category!

Misplaced CDs

Don't ask me how, but I've managed to lose five CDs: Mariah's Emancipation of Mimi, Missy's Cookbook, Coldplay's X & Y and Rush of Blood to the Head, and Barenaked's Hits from the Nineties. I'm so upset. I've searched for them and can't find them anywhere. How could five CDs get misplaced? One - I could see, but five. I don't usually cart them around - especially not in groups. Bummer! I really wanted to listen to Coldplay, too and no - I hadn't copied it to my iPod yet.

Obviously, buying an entertainment center didn't help. Is there a robot that helps humans ensure they put their Cds/DVDs on the rack where they belong? That's what I need. A little robot that can follow me around picking up items that I lay down and forget about. I recently found my Madagascar DVD in plain sight, after searching for it for two weeks! Maybe my ghost is acting up?

Call Boxes?

This is the usual scene after a fender bender, everyone using their individual cell phone. California's freeways are lined with call boxes, but I wonder if they've become absolete?

I had to take an unexpected day away from my job today, which gave me the idea for this week's word:
Work

I pass this homeless camp daily and each and every day the man who calls this home, has the American flag proudly displayed. I wonder if he's a homeless Veteran who courageously served his country and, if so, how he did he end up here? Then I wondered, "how hard would I have to consciously work to maintain patriotism if this was my reality?

Corrupted Disk

Okay, how many of you still use floppy disks? Come on, I know you're out there, come out from behind the door and fess up. I know I can't be the only one!

Alright then, I'll speak only for myself, I use a floppy disk when blogging. It's large enough to store my .rtf files, convenient when working on location and easy to transfer to my home computer. I've tried emailing the entries to myself and have had them lost to the giant bit bucket more than five occasions.

Last night when it was time to upload my entry - poof! - drive A: was unreadable. The only option offered: format the disk. I had at least three blog entries on the darn thing, so there's no way I was formatting the disk!

I searched and found PCI Recovery Disk and much to my elation, after some trial and error, it worked! It recovered my blog.rtf file and I was saved.

The onscreen instructions could use improvement, with clearer explanations and mouse over descriptions. I tried recovering the file four times before succeeding. The numerous attempts were because I did not click the appropriate option at the correct time.

This software recovered my files, unlike another download which showed me the files existed, but demanded $40 to recover them. So if you're in a jam, you could do a lot worse than this free program, which also recovers Zip disk and hard drive files.

A Day in My Life

Spent the day in Santa Monica, having Afternoon Tea at the Tudor House and oohing and ahhing at Wild About Music. This store is barely a year old, it resides in the former space of one of my favorite haunts The Midnight Special Bookstore. I digress, Wild About Music has the most creative sculptures, paintings, iron works and funky ceramics related to music that you could expect to ever see or find. I literally got lost in its momentum for a solid hour. Boo had to pry me away. I bought a few items, but not what I really wanted!

Signs

"Signs. Signs.
Everywhere there are signs!"
Lunchboxes

Remember taking a lunchbox to school? Each school year I'd get a new one, it was an essential part of getting new school supplies. The thermos was metal for the longest time, until they did away with the glass inside. Then they switched to plastic for everything inside and outside and a thermos was never the same.

My usual lunch was a baloney sandwich, chips and chocolate milk or Kool - Aid. Sometimes I'd get a Hostess Cup Cake or Twinkie, but many times not. I didn't trade my lunches, cuz I usually liked what I had. Hmmm, I can remember fighting kids off and now that I think about it, what's so exciting about a baloney sandwich?

My mom tried getting me to eat Deviled Ham sandwiches, but there was no way I could do. The stuff looked like dog food spread on bread - yuck! I remember my friend opening her lunchbox and finding a sardine sandwich, who sends their child to school with a sardine sandwich? Oh, the humiliation!

As I got older and it became less cool to tote a lunchbox, I graduated to buying lunch at the school cafeteria. My favorite meal was the spaghetti and for dessert the hard chocolate brownie they'd serve. It was so hard, it was like a hockey puck, but boy, did I love those brownies.

I don't know if they even sell lunchboxes anymore. It's rare to see kids carrying anything in the open, everything's concealed in huge backpacks on wheels. There are the bravest of children who carry them as a backpack with their torsos hunched forward from the weight. I could carry my one or two books, homework in spiral bound notebook and lunch box with ease. Yea, those were the days!

Top 5 On Friday
Top 5 "Pop" Songs

(And before you all start groaning, these don't have to be recent pop songs)

~ David Cassidy I Think I Love You Seriously. This song has a catchy beat and the words rhyme and flow so well.

I'm sleeping and right in the middle of a good dream.
Like all at once I wake up from something that keeps knocking at my brain.
Before I go insane I hold my pillow to my head
and spring up in my bed screaming out the words I dread
I Think I Love You.

Can't get anymore bubble gum than this! LOL

~ The Beach Boys Surfer Girl (Oh the harmony this group had. Excellent harmony)
~ Stacy Q. Only in my Dreams (Is she the one that sang in malls?)
~ Any First Edition songs
~ Boy George Karma Chameleon

Okay, enough on this theme...next!

***My interpretation....go for the cheesiest songs I could remember.

Wind

It's been very cold in So. Cal. Temps in the low sixties and windy days make for temps that feel more like the fifties. We're not used to that! Remained indoors for lunch today. Much too cold to be out walking or sitting in the sun listening to my iPod.

Feline Thursday

What similarity does a cat have with a camel or giraffe? All other animals move the front left leg with the back left leg. Cats, camels and giraffes move each front leg with the opposite back leg.

Lunch time

Had a little scare today as the gals and I went to a hamburger joint for lunch. The place was packed, the kind of crowded where you have to share a table with strangers. So we finally received our orders and are chatting and eating and laughing and eating when Boop tells us, "that's my alarm."

Well it didn't register with any of us as we kept eating and Boop remained seated. Had it been my car alarm, I would have been saying "that's my alarm!" as I was in motion to the car! She finally repeats it again, "That's my alarm!" and we all rose and left.

Approaching her SUV nothing seemed amiss and the street was jam packed with people. As we reached the car, the driver's side window was halfway down. What I can't figure out is how they got her power window down?

We checked the vehicle and nothing was stolen. She had her purse with I.D. with her, so they didn't steal her personal information, but I'm still troubled about what they were trying to do and how no one seemed bothered by the car's alarm.

Winter is such a dreary time of year. So, to brighten things up, this week's word is:
Color

Now why wasn't color selected as the theme before I posted photos of quilts?? LOL I am so ready for spring and summer. All the joints are hurting. Arthritis sucks.

Meaning of Christmas

Our neighbors were away during Christmas, so we celebrated Christmas on Sunday. We had our Christmas dinner, gift exchange and good convo and fun. It's the relationships that make the holiday what it is.

10 Favorite Current Shows

~ Mission Road
~ The Whole Picture
~ Stargate SG-1
~ Supernatural
~ Making Movies
~ Bones
~ Stargate Atlantis
~ Food Wrap
~ Killer Instinct

All but three are on cable. I am shocked that my forensic shows are missing. A&E messed around with the line up and scheduling and it just doesn't work for me anymore. Sigh.

A Day in My Life

Quilts can tell a story or teach you one's history or infuse you with warmth and color. Some say Quilts are the fabric of America.

Winter

It's a very windy and cold night. Not many folks out and a lot trash and paper blowing about. It's a night to be indoors watching a good movie, with a bowl of popcorn or hot cup of chocolate. Instead, I'm waiting for Boo to return from Kohl's as I listen to podcasts on my iPod.
Randomness

I lucked out and found DMBW for Boop's birthday. Thank God for Borders Books and coupons: I didn't end up having to pay a ridiculous price! We know those record companies love to gouge the hell out of us.

I'm still searching for a great price on a wireless router and am hopefull Comp USA or Circuit City will have awesome MLK, Jr. sales. If not, I'll have to break down and pay $30 or so for the darn thing. I'm not looking forward to that.

One thing about David Bowie is his music never gets old. I'm listening to one of his best songs Heroes and nothing beats hearing this on loud volume - nothing. Thanks to the Griffin iTrip FM Transmitter I could also listen to it in the car. It's snug connection with the iPod makes for excellent reception. Thanks, Boo for the jamming Christmas gift!

In between the hundreds of songs, I also have my Podcasts intermixed and it makes for fantastic road trip accompaniment. It also means I have more gear to lug around. I always have my digital camera and PDA. Now with the iPod, I needed a larger bag to hold my gadgets and tote around. Woe to the punk who messes with me. One slap of my bag will be lethal! LOL

Last item, our printer karma's improving; the Lexmark is printing again. Yea, funny thing, you change the cartridge and it uh - prints! Yep, that's all it needed, though, Boo is now eyeing laser printers and negotiating for a Samsung model. Just my luck, I threw in the towel too quickly.

Received an email inquiring where the cable internet came from and realized that this is one of my unposted posts! Hopefully, this explains how that all came about.

Cable Company Offer

Way back in February of 2005, Boo responded to a letter from the FTC regarding our Cable Company's handling of premium channels. A class action lawsuit had been filed and, if we were affected, we could possibly receive a year's worth of premium channels free or six months of free Internet.

Boo applied and we'd forgotten about it. Well, last week (mid - December 2005) our cable company contacted us to tell us that we were eligible. So, we're receiving six months of free Internet and the installer is arriving in two weeks. The installation must occur Before the end of 2005. I still can't believe our luck and keep thinking it's going to disappear! Boo's ecstatic, of course.

I thought we'd have to let the free offer pass since we do not have an extra computer with built-in ethernet to connect the Cable Internet to. However, Boo has rationalized the need for us to take advantage of this offer and so, Boo's decided that we will buy a new notebook computer. Now you understand that we already have DSL, which I've been quite smitten with. The rational is that we'll do comparison speed tests!

I laughed and explained how it's the equivalent of me buying new drapes, deciding they don't match the existing carpet and deciding we need to re-carpet! Oh well, it's Boo's decision and it can never - ever be said that I came up with this one! LOL

Kicking myself...

Boop's birthday is Monday and she wanted the soundtrack to Diary of a Mad Black Woman, which I fully intended to buy her. Punky was making an amazon order and asked if I wanted anything. Well work being the way it is, I didn't respond until very late afternoon Monday and missed the order!

Now I can't find the bloody CD anywhere. I've checked Circuit City, Best Buy, Sam Goody and they have them for online ordering only. There's no way in hell that CD's making it for a Monday delivery, especially when it's a holiday. My last hope is this fantastic music store in Hollywood called Amoeba Records. Problem is I can't do an online search, so I'm off to Hollywood tomorrow.

Foto Pherret
It's January, a time of year when the numbers on the thermometer are very low, so our word for this week is:
Cold

When it's cold - and in So. Cal. this means in the fifties - folks seek a hot brew of coffee or steaming cup of tea. The lighting and warm colors of the interior are very inviting, aren't they?

My Highlights of 2005:

~ 25th anniversary!
~ The installation of broadband changed the frequency and length of my online surfing and I became addicted (yes, I said addicted) to Podcasts. I wouldn't dare try to download Podcasts on dial up. The files are too large and I haven't the patience to wait.
~ Concerts: Moody Blues, Los Lonely Boys, The Eagles
~ Quality time with Mom
~ Gatherings wih in-laws
~ Buddah acting like a kitten at 13 years
~ The Peace Walk
~ Rekindling friendships with Roadrunner, Chata, Mrs. Cleaver and Rae
~ Freedom

Printer Karma

When it comes to printers, we have the absolute worst karma. We've owned several brands: Epson, Canon, Lexmark and every single one has failed after a year or so. I do not print much and neither does Boo. I guess the printer heads become clogged and/or the ink cartridges ruined. Several attempts at cleaning the head have failed and we're off to buy another printer.

What photos I print, are printed at either Costco or Sam's Club. The prices are good and the quality far superior to anything I could get using an ink jet at home. Also, the photos don't fade as quickly and the paper's much thicker. I'm thinking we should buy a laser printer and forego ink jet.

I don't know what I've done in my lifetime to warrant such bad karma, but I've obviously done something. Even Boo looks at me with a strange expression when attempting to print a Border Books coupon and the printer's dead - again. Anyone wishing for a new printer and needing someone to jinx it? LOL

A Day in the Life

We stumbled upon the Just Dogs Gourmet kiosk in the mall and, of course, Punky had to stop and see what gourmet treats she could buy for her baby. I took offense to the kitty shaped biscuits, but had no problem with the squirrels! We bought a birthday gift for our belly dancing friend from the last vendor.

The Day of Epiphany

We're shuttling around town Friday night and I'm shocked by the large number of houses still lighting their Christmas decorations. I'm talking mini and large bulb displays. Candy canes. Stars. Icicles. And plenty of lit Christmas trees in the window.

Christmas and the holidays are over. Finished. Done! That is until Boo insisted that it was the sixth of January - The Day of the Epiphany - and Christmas has not officially ended. A heated discussion followed and in the end, it's only fitting that we should come upon this sight.
Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis

Have I recently repeated how much I love the DVR (Digital Video Recorder)? Ours are from the cable company and they (yes, there's one for the living room and the bedroom)never disappoint.

When SG-1 and Atlantis went on hiatus last summer, I left them in my first run episode scheduled recordings queue and forgot about them. Well, the shows have returned and the DVR recorded them giving me a fantastic surprise last night!

The same thing happened when The Dead Zone aired a Christmas special. I noticed the DVR recording and inquisitively checked. TDZ special was so-so, but the fact that I didn't miss the episode or have to scour the TV Guide weekly for specials was just too perfect.
