Random Ten
10 songs that sum up your weekend...or were on your weekend playlist...and one picture that relates back. (oh, and if you feel like it, tell us why you picked the songs you did)

During the week I usually come home red eyed and too beat to sit in front of the computer. So this weekend I spent some quality time listening to lots of indie music as I blogged, organized computer files, prepared my Muvo for podcast listening at work and surfed. The weather's turning cold and funky again - damned groundhog! Here's to Spring arriving sooner than later, good health for the kitties and a week full of pulsating music.

~ Stereophile B.A.S.S.
~ Black Lab Lonely Boy
~ Buckfast California
~ Wishbone The Healing Ground
~ Howard Jones Building our own Future
~ The Jerrys Change Your Mind
~ Revery In the Way She
~ Hydrogyn Blind
~ Patrick Hall One for the Ages
~ Cake or Death We Are Not Satisfied

Fetish

It seems my beloved Boo has a fetish for gnomes. Can't quite say when it materialized and made its presence known, but it's harmless in the grand scheme of things.

Boo wants Traveling Gnome prominently displayed when I'm photographing and it actually brings a smile to my face and makes me laugh. It's funny the things that inspire and lighten.
A Day in My Life

We began the day with a trip to the optometrist to pick up Boo's glasses and sunglasses. Since they weren't ready, I listened to podcasts and read the People magazine which, of course, had everything Anna Nicole. Such a tragic life that continues like a circus sideshow even in death.

I made a pitstop at an enchanting metaphysical bookstore named Alexandria in Pasadena and perused the journal section. Haven't kept a written one in years and in 2006 shredded previous ones. We window shopped the Smtih & Hawken's Garden Center and fantasized about which over priced patio furniture we'd like! The day culminated with delivery of ground beef with vidalia onions from the Kansas City Steak Co. These patties are great for grilling or meatballs or albondiga soup.

Indie Artist Frustration

I thought I would have purchased my first online music download by now. Much to my surprise the three artists that I want most do not sell their songs. They give me the ability to listen to the songs I want without supplying a BUY button!

It's very disappointing and frustrating. On the one hand, indie artists worry about making a living doing what they love and yet, they fail to "close the deal". Listeners - you know, your so-called audience, will pay for your music if you provide an easy, convenient way to pay for it.

It's damned frustrating.

Thursday Thirteen
13 things I could give up for Lent (forty days)

~ Watching DVD movies. My cube mates would hate and ostracize me for choosing this. I would become the Step-cube mate.
~ Sweets Not a hard thing to do since I don’t have a sweet tooth and I’m not a chocoholic.
~ Computer/Internet A bit too challenging since I need to work on the computer daily. I can’t take off work for forty days now can I?
~ Potato chips Ahhh, I love the chips and cannot eat a sandwich without them. I eat sandwiches at least twice a week so this would definitely smart.
~ Meat Hmmm, tempting…I could survive without it.
~ Driving I drive less than ever now that Boo and I commute.
~ Listening to Podcasts Blind me, this would hurt – seriously hurt. What would I listen to at work?
~ Watching T.V. Not a challenge because as it is, I DVR everything anyways. I’d just have to see everything on delay, what else is new! LOL
~ Tea (hot or iced) Ohh, I’d be a very grumpy bear each morning. Don’t think my cube mates would appreciate this.
~ Blogging A bit too easy, especially now that I’ve been arriving home so tired.
~ Listening to music Nasty, nasty choice. Just kill me why don’t you?
~ Snapping photos Easy. Haven’t been much in the mood lately so it’s more of uh – whatever.
~ Bread Yum-o. Alas, birthdays are coming up and I don’t want to be a kill joy by not participating.

So what did I decide?

Potato chips. It is a definite weakness of mine and I’m prone to desire chips more than popcorn, so this a real challenge for me and one that, if fulfilled, could potentially relieve me of a very fatty snack.

Wish me luck!

Day in My Life

I started out with a relaxing leg wax and massage, jaunted to Outback for a delish lunch and Peach Wallaby drink, capped it off with a slice of ice cream cake...yum-o and strolled about the harbor on a clear, sunny and warm day. That's the California that I know and love!

Yahoo Email Overzealous?

I've used Yahoo email for at least eight years, probably since its inception and my satisfaction has been good.

Lately, it seems that the new & improved Yahoo Email has become overzealous about labeling legit email as spam and dumping it into the Spam Folder. This angers me to no end because I have specifically toggled said emails as Not Spam!

So a warning to all Yahoo Email users, frequently check your Spam Folder for legit content lest, you miss out. I have been waiting for an invitation to an online community for about two weeks and lo & behold, it's been sitting in the Spam Folder since January 31st. Grrr!

Friday Five

  1. For these first seven weeks of 2007, what’s something you give yourself an A for? Eating breakfast daily. This is the meal I least enjoy and am most likely to skip. Yet, nutritionist's say it is the most importat
  2. What’s something you give yourself a B for? Taking time away from the computer. If I can't do what I need to in an hour or less, too bad; it remains unfinished.
  3. What’s something you give yourself a C for? Reading my daily Devotional. I am sometimes reading three days worth because I can't find the time!
  4. What’s something you give yourself a D for? Preparing things for the next work day. I still forget/misplace things that suck up valuable time each morning as I rush off to work.
  5. What’s something you give yourself an F for? Exercising. I continue to fail miserably.

The Thursday Thirteen
13 things I don't like about DVD Bonus features

~ Monotone delivery by director and/or screenwriter that puts me to sleep.
~ Explaining how something that was quite good still didn't make the final release and then not including it in the extras!
~ A two minute blip about anything qualifies as bonus footage.
~ Lack of trivia and details about the cast, filming locations or animals used.
~ Poor sound quality making it difficult to understand commentary.
~ Not discussing the soundtrack and why they chose the music they did. A movie without music would be so dead and boring, we couldn't view it!
~ Definite attitude of boredom or being put out by having to provide extras on commentators behalf.
~ Sharing how this project of theirs was so demanding and grueling but yet, six months later they can't think of anything to say to enlighten/entertain the audience.
~ Not telling us if:
* Easter Eggs are included
* If so, how to access and view them
~ Blow by blow description of what's on screen by the commentator as if I can't see it for myself. ~ Discussing every minute detail about the camera angle and how challenging it was to shoot the scene.
~ Expecting us to pay for an extended version on a second release instead of providing the footage as a bonus to begin with.
~ Very limited, if any, interactivity.

Perspective

We look at the same space and see entirely different things: Boo saw muscles and barnacles clinging to the surface of everything.

I saw debris.

Perspective makes for one's experience:

good/bad
happy/sad
exciting/dull

This weekend turned out to the Sixties Valentine's Mix. Here's a glimpse of some of our favorites. I think the entire iTunes playlist ended up being 6 hours! The sixties produced a lot of love/relationship songs with no foul language or explicit references to sex and doing it.

~ Stevie Wonder We Can Work it Out
~ The Beach Boys Surfer Girl
~ Junior Walker What Does it Take
~ The Mamas & Papas Words of Love
~ Bobby Hebb Sunny
~ Johnnie Taylor Who's Making Love
~ The Box Tops The Letter
~ Percy Sledge When a Man Loves a Woman
~ The Turtles You Showed Me
~ The Beatles All My Loving

iTunes Hate Affair Continues

It's been awhile since I've mentioned the aggravation and frustration iTunes causes in the Windows format.

I simply hate this program that I am forced to use with my iPod. I would love to separate the two and am totally sick and fed up with the bloody program!

I love the iPod but hate the bloody program I must use to manage my music.

Supposedly Steve Jobs is calling for the labels to release online music in an unprotected format (minus DRM). While this would be fantastic, the burning question I have is will iPod owners be able to synch their music without #)*%!&^ iTunes?

Bloody iTunes.

Reading is Fun

I found a neat site that allows you to read some of the classic books in short email snippets. It's called Daily Lit and after searching by author, title or genre you're presented with a list of books. Beside each title is the number of emails the book will require to complete.

You can set the time you'd like to receive your email (I accepted the 7:10 a.m. default) and am reading Charles Dickens Holiday Romance, a short story I am unfamiliar with. I've read A Christmas Carol, Great Expectations, Oliver Twist and A Tale of Two Cities, so it's exciting for me to read a work I'd never heard of.

Only titles in the public domain are available, but if you've never read Moby Dick or The Count of Monte Cristo or works by Edgar Allen Poe now is your chance. They'll arrive in byte size snippets of three to four paragraphs Monday thru Friday and each morning is like an opening a gift!

Friday Fun

Furry Friday

In honor of my new puppy,… a fur friends theme!

1. When you were growing up, were pets part of your family? If so, what kind? Definitely. We usually had dogs and once or twice a cat, though they were more aloof and less cuddly.

2. If you have a pet (or 2 or 3 or 4!), do you tend to spoil it (or them) rotten? Absolutely. I am now a certified cat lover (Thanks, Boo) and he is spoiled beyond belief. Our outdoor cat is also quite the princess!

3. What is your feeling on pets in clothes? Cute, practical, or too Paris Hilton for you? A bit too much. I don't want my fur companions to feel like playthings or dolls. Besides, how can they face the public in get ups like that???

4. If you don’t have any, would you want one? And if so, what kind of pet?

5. Do you have any favorite pet, current or in the past? I still remember the passing of my beloved cat. He died August 10, 1992. Soon thereafter Buddah arrived and he stole my heart!

Thursday Thirteen
13 reasons I hate seeing movies in the theater (In no particular order)

~ Outrageous prices for snacks
~ Uncomfortable seats
~ Ringing cell phones
~ Skyrocketing ticket prices
~ Stinky people
~ People talking during the movie
~ People kicking the back of my chair
~ The commercials – not film trailers…TV/Cable TV commercials HELLO! I just paid $12 I shouldn’t have to sit through ten minutes of commercials, in addition to another ten minutes of film trailers.
~ Teenagers having popcorn fights and splattering everyone else
~ Big haired people who still block the view with stadium seating! LOL
~ Folks getting in/out of their seats several times during the movie and ultimately stepping on my toes
~ Inadequate parking
~ Kids running around during the movie

Ten on Tuesday
10 Movies That Have Made You Cry

~ The Joy Luck Club
~ Meet Joe Black
~ Sleepless in Seattle
~ Somewhere in Time
~ The English Patient
~ The Notebook
~ Simon Birch
~ Memoirs of a Geisha
~ Forrest Gump (I remember sitting in the theater next to a twenty-something guy who completely fell apart and began sobbing. It was quite unsettling.)
~ East of Eden (I have wanted this DVD forever but kept thinking that it would "go on sale" and I could buy it for less. Alas, the price has increased! Guess I'll add to my imaginary Amazon wish list.)

A casserole of chilaquiles made for delicious *uperbowl fare. Little Girl allowed a rare photo opp. Punky thought she'd score a bite or two. And the football shaped cake was the icing on a fantastic game and excellent half time entertainment by Prince.

This N That

~ It's been crazy around here with lots of stuff happening and not enough time for blogging. Tomorrow's the big game and we're off to a party. Seeing as how the temps are finally inching upward, I feel an ice cream social around the corner for dessert?

~ When I upgraded my cell phone last May to a camphone with texting capability, some readers thought I'd:

1) Quickly tire of the new features and cease using them.
2) Find the megapixel of the camera substandard and not use it.
3) Still carry around my regular 5 megapixel camera just in case.

Well I'm happy to report that I regularly use the camphone for texting friends and blogging, snapping photos on the fly and I do not carry the 5 meg camera with me anymore. I don't need it.

The megapixel on the camphone, while nowhere near the quality of my favorite camera, is quite good. I think it's the equivalent of my first 2 megapixel camera save for the flash. I'm lost without my camphone and though it receives heavy use, it's held up great and performs than satisfactorily. Again, this is the best upgrade I've made!

~ My friends love receiving photos of Travel Gnome or Roaming Gnome as my pal Rae has christened him. You can view the new guy's photo with Buddah on the side bar. He's a little too small for larger environments, but then, that's why we also have the Travelocity Gnome.

~ I was elated to find 84 Charing Cross Road one of my favorite films at Amazon. If you're looking for excitement, explosives, sleazy lust scenes, etc. this film is not for you. It's beauty lies in its dialogue and the chemistry between Anne Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins. I was happy when it arrived this week and it's a film I'll soon view again.

~ Still nothing new on the concert scene. No announcements of tour dates by bands I want to see. We are trying to secure tickets to Wicked at the Pantages theater. Most of the dates in the near future are sold out.

I hope everyone's having a great weekend and an even happier big game celebration!

Friday 5 for February 2: Parts

1. What’s your favorite part (to eat) of a chicken? Breast
2. What’s your favorite cut of beef? Roast
3. What’s your favorite cut of pork? Don't know.
4. What’s your favorite part of a Snickers bar? The whole thing! LOL
5. What’s your favorite part of a pizza? The toppings! I know the crust is important but the toppings make the pie.

Thanks for playing, and may every part of your weekend be delicious!
