Buddah Update
Well, it looks like he's going to need acupuncture again for his rear legs. The arthritis is very bad in that area and it's affecting is mobility and quality of life. We give him pain medicine but must wait until Monday for his first session. I feel very worried about him and sad that he is in so much discomfort and pain. I know that my spouse and I have wondered in silence if it's time to let him go. I just can't. I'm not ready to give up. I love him so much and he is such a crucial part of our family that, I can't bear to consider it. Of course, we dare not discuss amongst ourselves, either. I know we're both afraid and sad.
As for the tumor...the vet steadfastly maintains that we are wrong and the tumor has not reduced in size. It is, according to her, wishful thinking on our parts. We can't seem to regulate Buddah's thyroid and so, he's not yet a candidate for radiation. It seems that a seven day stay in the hospital is imminent for our little guy. I'll schedule vacation so that I can be near him and visit him. I don't want him to think we've abandoned him. We've never been separated that long.
I keep reminding myself to take it one day at a time. Prayers will be much appreciated, thank you.
I live in Southern California and live the digital lifestyle. I love technology, engage in social networks and thanks to the Amazon Kindle enjoy reading again. I listen to many podcasts and am interested in the paranormal. I don't go ghost hunting or anything like that, but I love reading, viewing and listening to a great fright!

The Friday Four
1. Is April really the cruelest month? Heaven's no, especially since I was born in April. How can it possibly be the cruelest month!
2. Do you ever speak in Middle English in honor of April? Now this, I have not tried, however, you've given me ideas.
3. Do you think April's showers will bring you May flowers? Absolutely. Without April's showers, there'd be no flowers!
4. Do you know anyone named April and does this person have a brother named September? Uh no, and I hope not to know someone with names like these. LOL

Thursday Threesome
::Goodie Two Shoes::
Onesome: Goodie-- What is your your favorite "goodie" you treat yourself to when you've finished a project or maybe even just survived a long day? Ice cream? ...a long bath? ...a good book? Ice cream or cookies and milk. I guess these are my comfort snacks.
Twosome: Two-- Quick! Two things that make you smile! No thinking, just write! An embarrassing faux pas or good joke and children exploring this wondrous world we live in.
Threesome: Shoes-- ...and how about your favorite pair of shoes? You know, the ones you look for an occasion to wear! (Yes, guys that ratty pair of tennis shoes does count...) I'm always ready and waiting to wear by Birkis. If I can get away with wearing them to a formal, I'll do it!

Thursday's Tattle
Music
Do you sing in the shower? Shazam, yes I do!
Do you sing in the car? Yes, positively yes.
Do you ever cry in the car while listening to the radio? That hasn't happened in a long time.
Have you ever been singing in the car and realize the car next to you is watching you? Unfortunately, all the time. But do I care? No. I'm happy. I'm having a good time. I'm minding my own business and my music's not disturbing anyone else. The appearance of me singing may disturb others, but heck, you can't have everything! LOL
Do you listen to the radio loud or soft? Most definitely loud. Not like the cars the vibrate your windows and body with their loud bass, no - not like that. Just loud enough to discourage conversation between me and my passenger.

Random Questions; Random Days
Are you a brand name shopper, or do you bargain shop? At first, I was going to answer no, but then, I took a good look around me and realized that I have a lot of name brand stuff! However, in my defense, I must make it clear that I enter a store in search of bargains - first and foremost. If the items I purchase happen to be name brand, then I can't help that!
Yeah, that's it...that's the truth and I'm sticking to it!

What's on Right now?
What's On your shopping list Right Now? Nothing. I need to stop shopping. In a span of two weeks, I've bought concert tix for two performances and let's just say, they weren't inexpensive. Oh, and they were not on my shopping list. So, if this is what I do without one, I best not make one! LOL

Daily Dirt
Age Ain't Nothin' But A Number...
1. Have you ever dated a younger guy/girl? No, at least, I don't think so.
2. If yes, did it work out? If no, would you? There was a time when I insisted that my date be older than me. Now, it just doesn't matter, as long as they're emotionally and mentally mature.
3. Have you ever dated an older guy/girl? Definitely. I believed older was better.
4. If yes, did it work out? If no, would you? Ah yes, it's worked out splendidly. Twenty four years worth!
5. Which do you prefer: dating an older or younger guy/girl? Based on my limited experience, I prefer dating someone older. Now that CAN change, I just don't know at this point.

Random Questions; Random Days
What's your favorite thing to do on a lazy rainy day? Well, if it's cold and raining, I like to stay under the covers and watch movies. Especially the old black and white classics you can find on Turner Classic Movies cable channel.
Otherwise, I'll remain indoors and either play board games (Boggle, Scrabble, or Uno) or work on the computer. I can be updating blogs, working on a website or getting digital photos ready for printing.

Tuesday Twosome
Sleep:
1. Side of the bed: Left or Right? Left
2. Sleep with or without covers? Depends; when it's hot - without. When it's cold - with!
3. Sleep with or without night light? With night light. I don't like stumping my toes in the darkness or possibly stepping Buddah's tail.
4. Deep or light sleeper? Oh, deep sleeper.
5. More annoying to be awoken by: alarm or phone call? Both! I'd prefer to awaken naturally, once my body's had plenty of rest. Oh, if only...

TV Tuesday
Stop me if you've heard this one...
1. Who is your favorite stand-up comedian of all time? It's hard to pick just one....okay, Jack Benny.
2. Which one could you do without? (Not your type of humor, or just plain stupid!) Chris Rock is just too crass.
3. Which comedian do you think has gone on to have a great career aside from doing stand-up? George Lopez. He has a successful TV show and still does stand up comedy at concert halls. Also, Ellen Degeneres has a had a very successfull career.
~Bonus~ If you went to a comedy club on amateur night, and they gave you some jokes and a microphone, would you go onstage? Absolutely not! Besides, I'd faint so quickly, I wouldn't be standing long enough to even consider it.

How sweet it is...
to be off on a Monday! I'm relaxing, sitting outside enjoying this beautiful 80 plus degree weather and sipping tea. It's quiet, everyone's gone to work and school and the neighborhood is very still. I still awoke around 7:00 a.m. and decided to logon and do blogging updates, answer emails, etc.
Yesterday, we went to visit my in-laws in Murrieta and my God, the weather was so fabulous - plus 90 degree temps - I didn't want to return home! We attempted to go to Benihana's for an early dinner, but were thwarted by the dead stopped traffic on I-15 northbound. We inched our way to the nearest exit and forty minutes later, exited the freeway and jumped on the southbound route to Temecula.
We never knew why we were dead stopped. As we inched along, we could see the traffic ahead snaking its way through the hills and passed many a stranded motorist, with hood raised and steam billowing. I felt very bad for the motorists because I knew help was not imminent. As it was, creative drivers (to put it nicely) were driving the shoulder at plus 45 miles per hour, while others backed out of the on ramps!!
Once we arrived in Temecula we dined at Black Angus and had a very nice, relaxing, and air conditioned birthday celebration. My FIL seemed very happy, and why shouldn't he, it's his 82nd birthday today! He had a smashing appetite, too! LOL
So, is it just me, or are we all usually in a hurry? Don't we all have someplace to be, at a specific time? So, if this is true and you were stuck in the traffic predicament I just described, would you have waited or executed one of the manuevers I described?

So, is it just me, or are we all usually in a hurry? Don't we all have someplace to be, at a specific time? So, if this is true and you were stuck in the traffic predicament I just described, would you have waited or executed one of the manuevers I described?
Daily Dirt
1. you could have a lifetime supply of something, what would you want? Limitless and boundless energy.
2. you could be an object, what would you be? A beach/patio umbrella so that I could be in the sun all day, while provided shade to those who are tired and hot.
3. you could steal something of your crush's room, what would you get? Don't know.
4. you could travel right now, where would you go? Italy. I'd spend a month in Italy exploring and feasting!
5. could date someone famous, who would you date? Oh dear, Sean Connery or Johnny Depp.

Woo hoo!
We bought tickets for Madonna in June at the Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim, CA and Simon & Gurfunkel in July at the Hollywood Bowl. I am totally stoked that we've received fairly good seating. I originally wanted tix for Madonna's first go round, but she was at the Forum - a venue I absolutely refuse to go to. It's like, there's no decent seating if you happen to be anywhere but floor level. No way.
I gambled and bet that Madonna - being Madonna - would have to perform at another venue in Southern California. Sure enough, her concert at the Pond was announced, but by the time I heard about it, seats were in the nosebleed section. So, I gambled again theorizing that she'd have to do more than one date and this was my lucky day!

Sunday Brunch
Do It Yourself
Would you be able to do these things yourself or have someone do it for you?
1. Fix a flat tire. Yes, this I could do myself.
2. Fix a tear or make alterations to clothing. Umm, probably.
3. Unclog a severely plugged up sink or toilet. No, I need help with this.
4. Change the oil in your car. No, need the mechanic for this.
5. Put together an unassembled toy or piece of furniture out of the box. Definitely can do! I'm not saying that I'd be blazingly fast, but I'd get it done.

saturday-8 ::
anniversaries and technologies abound!
1. my parents and my favourite couple recently had their anniversaries (36 and 11 yrs. respectively). my marriage fell apart in year 7. what year of marriage do you consider to be comfortable, kind of "past the break-up point," if any? Our experience and that of our friends has shown year twelve to be the most challenging. If you can work through it, you'll come out stronger individually and as a couple.
2. i just got a new sony ericsson t610 mobile phone. do you own a mobile phone? if no, why not? if yes, if you could upgrade free-of-charge, what would you upgrade to? Girl, I've had a cell phone since 1988 and a free upgrade would have to include a camera/video phone. Some of the Sony and Nokia models have these features.
3. one anniversary, my H purchased me diamond earrings and a diamond necklace, knowing i wear neither earrings nor jewelry. i'd asked for an anniversary band, so i exchanged the necklace for a diamond anniversary band. he was very upset ... would you have kept the necklace, even though you know your H didn't listen to what you truly wanted & just grabbed something he/she knew you'd never wear? No, I would have said something, but then again, if my spouse did get upset, I wouldn't consider that my problem.
4. i have a camera on my phone (still trying to figure out how to use it!). i have heard that people are taking pics w/ their cameraphones of things like credit cards, compromising security and safety. with all of this new mobile technology, do you feel our health, safety and/or security is at risk, OR do you feel that security technology is keeping up with mobile technology? I think any tool can be used for nefarious purposes. It's not the tool/technology that's the problem, it's us - human beings.
5. the same year my H bought me the diamond necklace/earrings, i found out he'd been online having cyberaffairs w/ various women around the US. i was SO angry i threw out the diamond earrings. in fact, my H probably even asked one of his cybersluts for gift advice as they did a lot of ... ahem ... "talking." would you have kept the diamond earrings? Probably. Why not? In a pinch, they could be sold. He certainly didn't deserve to get his money out of it by selling them or giving them to someone else as a gift.
6. my new phone comes with bluetooth technology, and i even purchased a wireless headset that works brilliantly! have you heard of bluetooth technology? (if not, visit electronics.howstuffworks.com/bluetooth.htm and let me know what you think!) Sure I have. Bluetooth took awhile to get off the ground and find its niche. You can even use your bluetooth enabled phone (with compatible phone service) to communicate wirelessly with your notebook and surf the web!
7. before my granddad passed, my grandparents were married for 60 years. who is the couple that you know who've been married the longest, and how long have they been married for? (approximate if you aren't sure of the number) My aunt and uncle have reached their 50 year anniversary, but the most important question is, what is the quality of their marriage? Sure, they've reached 50 years, but the quality is the pitts; they constantly fight and experience long periods of not speaking to each other.
8. my favourite color is blue, my cat is a blue point siamese, and i'm in LOVE with this new bluetooth technology! what is YOUR favourite color, and why do you feel that way? Mine is purple and love it because it's dark, rich and vibrant!

Printing Digital Photos
You can always tell when I'm off work, because my posts are during the day. It's a gorgeous warm day with a little breeze and I'm off to run errands. The main one being that I must get to the camera store, so that I can receive my 25 free digital prints. I bought my camera at a camera shop that offers one year of 25 free prints. Now for me, it's a must not to let that pass unused.
Where do you print your photos and what do you pay? I know Costco will print 4 X 6 for $.19 or 5 X 7 for $.69. I've never understood why the fifty cent increase is warranted. Walgreens sells 4 X 6 prints at $.29 each, which seems to be the going rate. I tried online printing, but was displeased with the upload conundrum and turn around lag. I'm on dial up, so it took some time to upload my images, even if they were in .jpg format and then have to wait one to two weeks to receive them.
By hand carrying my CF card to the camera store, I get to print my photos from the .tif format, which I firmly believe prints clearer, smoother, much improved images. I actually took the time to print one set from .jpg's and the same set of photos from .tif. The .tif definitely looked better with smoother edges and much more crisp. Anyway I'm babbling, everyone have a great day!

The Thursday Threesome
We were talking about how things get done here at the Back Porch and thought we'd include everyone in the discussion: ::A geek in the family::
A geek-- Hey, who handles tech support at your place? You? ...the six year old? ...or someone from outside? ...and how about in your web space? No, we're not looking for techs; we're just curious . It's me. I'm the 'tech gal' in my home. This includes burning photo CDs, troubleshooting MS Word and Excel problems, Google searches, and updating blogs. I'm a Jill of all trades!
in the-- computer? Just a curiosity for the designer types: what Operating System are you running? ...and which browser? Since sites can show up differently in different browsers it's more than a casual question. I'm using Windows ME and run the Mozilla browser. I love tab browsing and the fact it's not as bloated. Also, IE has so many security flaws, it's frightening.
Family-- Do any family members read your place? Do they care? Do they have a clue? ...and how about your 'off line' friends? ...or do you supply a little bit of separation there? As far as I know, only one family member - besides my spouse - knows about my blogs or has shown any interest. Most are oblivious to my online exploits. I do supply separation by not discussing items of 'delicate nature'. When I share a humorous story, I'm likely to not mention names or, if I do, I use a pseudonym. Nor do I use a signature in my email directing recipients to my blog.

Music Vocabulary Lesson
1. What's your definition of 'Jazz'? What musicians would you put into this category? What musicians would you *not* put into this category? When tuning into a jazz radio station, what would you expect to hear? The musicians I'd expect to hear on a jazz station are Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Muddy Waters, Grover Washington, Jr., Billie Holiday, Poncho Sanchez, etc. The ones I don't consider jazz are Kenny G, Michael Bolton, Peter White, folk like this.
2. What's your definition of 'Rock'? I know this genre is *huge*, but take your best guess. What musicians would you put into this category? Rock is hard driving, guitar riddled, loud, pulsating music. Some of the greats (in my book) Led Zep, Aerosmith, Bowie, Rolling Stones, Beatles, Yes, Pink Floyd, Nazareth, Blue Oyster Cult, Eric Clapton, Angel, Grand Funk, Moody Blues, Guns N Roses.
3. What about electronica music? This one is probly harder because it's not as well known by the masses (in the technical sense of the word). As a hint, I would say it started in the very late 70s with bands like The Cure, Emerson Lake and Palmer, and Yes, moving up thru Gary Numan, Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode and Ultravox, up to things like Garbage, The Crystal Method, Bonobo, and A3 (yes, this includes jungle, triphop, etc). You'll never see this in the US, but if you were going to turn on a radio station to listen to electronica, what would you expect to hear? Where do you draw the line at what wouldn't be considered? Music that's heavily synthesized; even the drum tracks are produced electronically. Thomas Dolby and Kraftwerk were the ones to popularize electronic drums, but then Dolby like Peter Gabriel, has always been on the cutting edge.
Bonus Question for Comments: If you were going to start up a radio station to bring fans out of the woodwork that normally would hide what they listen to, what types of music would you put into the rotation? Would you have to be broad, or could you just do one genre? Please go into detail. Okay, this ought to give everyone a good laugh, but do a search on 'house parties/concerts' and I'll prove I'm onto something.....I'd play folk music. Folk music has an untapped audience who's being totally ignored. Of course, I would have to be 'broad', but I'd include folk music in the mix, especially new artists. You'll find many of them performing at house parties/concerts and indie coffee houses. There's something to be said for songs with good lyrics (that almost paint a picture) and nothing more than the acoustic guitar, occasional harmonica and possibly violin.

Google Email
I received a pleasant surprise when I logged onto Blogger; an invitation to sign up and beta test their new email service called GMail. For those who may not know, Google's new email service has received a lot of flak for their privacy policy, which states that all email will be robotically monitored so ads, appearing in the email screen, can be tailored to the email's content. In fairness to Google, they clearly state how they're going about tailoring the ads. There is no deception on their part. If one is uncomfortable with the TOS, they need not sign up.
I'm keeping an open mind and have signed up for the service. I firmly believe that there is no privacy as regards email and I'll see how intrusive the ads are - if they are at all. If it's not to my liking, I can simply cease using the service. I understand the concern of privacy advocates, however, it's Google's server space and they're offering one gigabyte of email storage space. That's a lot of space and Google needs to earn revenue somehow. Yahoo and Hotmail's offerings are paltry by comparison.
Anyway, I'll keep you posted!

Random Questions; Random Days
Are you a spring cleaner? Why or why not? I try, in keeping with the spirit of things, but it's hard because the weather's getting super nice and then I want to be out - having fun and enjoying myself. I do better 'spring cleaning' in the winter, when it's cold and there's not much else to do. It's harder to get moving and motivated, of course, but there's no competition for time and attention. LOL

Random Questions; Random Days
Sorry about no question yesterday, we had no power! How well or long can you survive without power? Hmmmm, I'm really having to think back....I think the longest we were without power was eight hours back in 1994 - the day of the Northridge earthquake. I don't remember feeling that it was a huge inconvenience, isn't that odd? Now I'm going to wonder about why this is!
I've got it, the earthquake occurred in January, during winter. Even though it was an unseasonably warm winter, the heat wasn't intense enough to require air conditioning or concern about food spoilage, so long as the refrigerator remained closed. During the summer of 2001, my city experienced five power outages lasting from thirty minutes to four hours - now that was uncomfortable and downright wrong! LOL

If you worked for a store and you saw another employee steal something, would you tell the manager? I don't think so. Management draws a salary for 'managing' employees. Let the manager earn his/her salary. I'm a firm believer in "what goes around, comes around". So I have no doubt the thief employee will get his/hers somewhere down the road. It's not for me to judge.

Just the facts, m'am…
Whether it was Barney Fife with one bullet in his pocket, or Lt. Columbo's "Just one more thing…", we could be sure in the old days that TV cops would wrap everything up neatly in 30 to 60 minutes. These days it may take a few episodes, but TV's top cops still manage to right most of the world's wrongs.
1. Who is your favorite (past or present) TV cop? Mike Conners, 'Mannix' or Michael Douglas 'The Streets of San Francisco'.
2. Which TV cop do you think was the most crooked, or the most inept? Barretta
3. Which TV show had the best ensemble cast of police officers? Hawaii Five - 0
~Bonus~ You need to hire a bodyguard for yourself. Which TV cop do you choose? I choose two: Starsky & Hutch! It's my fantasy, I can two if I want! LOL
TV Note: Thursday and Friday this week at 10/9 p.m. central, Court TV is running a 2-part documentary called "Just the Facts", dissecting the accuracy of Hollywood's depiction of police work. "Police work is years of boredom punctuated by seconds of sheer terror," says Bill Davis of the California State Police. Doesn't quite seem that way on TV, does it?

He seems to be responding to the decreased meds and is eating better. It may be my imagination and wishful thinking, but it looks like he's gained a little weight - which would be grand! Anyway, we're very encouraged by this and are praying that he won't need radiation. The thought of being without him for seven days just tears me up. We've never been apart that long and I'd hate for him to feel so alone and abandoned.

Responsibility
My niece Ceci, has been telling me about a friend who's been served an eviction notice. Said friend can't understand why this is happening to her. According to friend, she pays her rent. She's been a good tenant. She's tolerated the damaged carpeting in her apartment that was never replaced. She's not a party person or prone to host large gatherings.
Okay. The flip side...she pays her rent when she feels like it. Meaning, it could be on time, but more likely, the middle of the next month. However, it is paid. The carpeting was fine until she moved in with her four children. True, she isn't a party person, she's just prone to loud fighting with her on/off again boyfriend, who also happens to be the father of her children.
So she is now lamenting the cruelty and coldness of her soon-to-be former landlord and feeling victimized by the system. A system that doesn't protect or respect a single mother of four. I don't know. Seems to me we have too many victims and not enough mature adults willing to act responsibly.
Don't play around with the rent, folks. Having a roof over one's head, especially when children are involved, is very important. My heart goes out to the children, who have already experienced a homeless crises once before in their young lifetimes.

Sunday Brunch
Potpourri
1. Which television series do you think had the best final episode? HBO's The Wire. The first season when they focused on the Baltimore drug hustlers was the best.
2. Do you own something that you really should throw away but can't part with? Oh yeah, I don't know of one person who doesn't have something. Come on, you know who you are, fess up.
3. Would you be willing to spend a night alone in a house that is supposedly haunted? Nah. I believe such things are possible and am in no hurry to check it out for myself. LOL
4. Go back to your childhood ... What did you want to be when you grew up? A lawyer or police officer.
5. What do you need to make your favorite pizza? Mozzarella cheese, pepperoni, mushrooms, a good sauce and a little ricotta mixed in.

Saturday Slant
Pet Peeves
No matter how hard you try to be tolerant and patient, there's that one thing that gets under your skin every time. There's that one something other people do that annoys you without fail. What is your pet peeve? Someone picking their teeth after a meal, while still seated at the table. How uncouth! That is such a nasty habit. Excuse yourself, walk to the bathroom, and floss.
Another pet peeve is people picking their butts or digging out the murphs while in a public space. Just ignore the rest of us and dig on in. Dig deeper if you must. It only causes us to wonder what bugs you've got crawling around your knickers that need scratching! LOL

The Friday Four
Taxes
1. Did you pay or get back? Whew, get back.
2. If you got back, what are you going to do with the money? No plans, yet. Although, my spouse owes so, it will probably go towards that.
3. Any chance I can get some? Uh, don't go there!
4. Any chance you're not paying your taxes at all because you've decided to secede the union and declare your domicile as an independent country? Heck no, I'm not seeking problems or trouble.
Daily Dirt
The first thing that comes to mind when you see this is:
1. Foot - Athletes
2. Family - Love
3. Television - Boob tube
4. Hair - Styling gel
5. School - Boring

3x Thursday:
Is bigger better?
1. Which do you prefer, a nice big expensive car, or an economical car that doesn't cost much but gets you where you need to go? Why? What's your dream car? I prefer economical. I'm very practical and don't feel the need for flash. As long as it's clean, drives smoothly, and gets me where I need to go, I'm comfy and happy. Thankfully, I've never felt the need to "Keep up with the Jones'".
2. What about money? Is it better to make a lot of money, or have enough to live and be comfortable on? If you had an ideal amount of money to make per year, what would it be? It's better to make a good salary, invest it and maintain a healthy emergency fund. A lot of money isn't always a good thing, if you're undisciplined and are going to waste it.
3. Which would you rather have: A high-stressed, high paying job that you hated, or a comfortable, easy-paced, lower paying job that you liked? LOL I think it's obvious...I'd rather have the easy paced, lower paying job that I liked. If I'm unhappy, it will be reflected in my work. I have to like and enjoy what I'm doing, elsewise, I feel like I'm wasting my life.
Bonus Question for Comments: Do you believe the more power you have, the more powerful you are? Why/Why not? And, what's your personal definition of power? I believe the more power one has, the easier it is for someone with low self esteem to buy into the false image and abuse the power. It sure does wonders for someone with a small/poor self image.

The Thursday Threesome
::Insomnia, the Cure for Sleep::
Onesome: Insomnia-- Ever have it? Some do and some don't, but have you ever been hounded awake for that endless hour after hour with no hope of sleep? ...or does the very act of touching head to pillow put you out for the count? Oh yeah, I've had it bad. The longest spell I had was three weeks. I was so tired during the day and my body ached, but come nightfall, I was wide awake.
Twosome: the cure-- Hey, if you do have the occasional bout or chronic insomnia, what do you do about it? Work? Read? Try cures? Hmmm... Did you ever find one that worked? I never found a cure that I was aware of . It suddenly ended and it took me almost a month to feel okay again. I always felt like I was in sleep deficit mode.
Threesome: for sleep-- Female/male, young/not so young, we all need varying amounts of sleep. What's your personal sleep cycle? Five hours? Ten hours? ...and if you had a choice, what would be your personal sleep cycle? ...and yes, "All day long" is a valid answer I need a good eight hours sleep. I wish I could function on four or five hours, but alas, eight is what I require. Anything less and I'm guaranteed to be yawning and napping during the lunch hour!

Unexpected Visit, Email and Vet Appointment
Ever have one of those days, where you feel very fortunate and happy? I had one of those today. Another dear friend and co-worker who works at a different location, visited me today and gave me a wonderful surprise; she stopped by with her daughter in tow and we had a wonderful visit and a whole lotta laughs - the kind that come from the gut and are deep throttle and hearty!
We haven't had that much fun since she transferred to another location. We touched base, caught up and explored new territory. After she left, I realized how much her visit lifted my spirit, much as my niece's daily phone calls. It was just so unexpected and surprising. Sometimes it's great being caught off guard! LOL
My nephew, whom I email on occasion, emailed me this morning and this too was a pleasant and welcome surprise. We talked some more about music and about his web site and the features he'd like to add. It was a wonderful email exchange and lasted for the duration of the day. I ended the day feeling very productive and yet, unstressed and easy going.
Then the vet appointment arrived. My cat, Buddah, is not doing well. I'm very concerned about his weight loss, due to loss of appetite and his increased lethargy. We went to the vet after work and she confirmed that his thyroid is very, very low and has a tumor. We don't know if it's cancerous or not and, of course, I'm very concerned and sad.
The vet said we'll know in a couple of weeks, whether Buddah will require radiation treatment. If so, he'll be away from home for seven full days and well, this will be hard for me. However, I'm praying and hoping for the best. As long as he's within 50 miles, after work I can drive to the hospital where he'll be and visit. Fellow pet lovers, please keep Buddah in your prayers.

Wednesday Whatevers
1. Would you prefer to live in an urban, suburban, or rural area; and why? I prefer to live in the suburbs because I feel it's quieter, less hectic, and safer. I'm still close enough to drive in to the city or go elsewhere for entertainment, I just don't want it in my backyard.
2. If a fountain of youth did exist, would you drink from it? Not unless my spouse and loved ones also drank from it. What's the point of remaining here in excess of 80 years if I'm alone? Beauty and youth will take one only so far.
3. What do you want your dying words to be? "I depart this earth having loved my family and friends to the best of my ability and I thank you for loving me in return. I leave unafraid and very happy and excited to begin the next journey."

Daily Dirt
What a shame…
1. What's the most embarrassing moment of your life? We were visiting a friend just after the Northridge earthquake of 1994 and discussing its magnitude and widespread damage. I mentioned about driving to work in downtown Los Angeles, not knowing if my building remained standing, etc. On my drive, I pass by county General hospital, a large expanse spanning several buildings.
Well, in the wee hours of the morning of the earthquake, I recollected how I looked in the direction of the hospital and it was pitch black. It was so black, I couldn't even make out the building's outline. I then finished my story by exclaiming, "Man, how I wish I'd had a camera to take a photo!"
2. What's the most embarrassing thing about your parents? Hmmm, I can't think of anything....wait....it's when my mom speaks aloud something I'd just as soon forget. You know, the equivalent of showing your baby photo, butt naked lying on a rug and exclaiming how "cute you look!"
3. What's the most embarrassing outfit you owned? I don't know about outfits but, I do remember a pair of high heeled, platform boots. Those of you from the 70s, are you with me ladies?? You remember, the style Gene Simmons of Kiss would wear. Yeah, those kind! LOL
4. What about your childhood are you ashamed of? I don't know about ashamed, but I wish I would have learned not to be so shy. It's cute when you're a child, but a hindrance in an adult. I wish I would have been encouraged to overcome my shyness.
5. Who's the most shameless person you've met? Naomi, she was a friend of a friend with a penchant for engaging in sex whenever, wherever. A group of us attended a jamming party, replete with DJ, and we couldn't find Naomi anywhere.
Several minutes later, Naomi emerged from the bushes with twigs, leaves, tiny rocks, etc. enmeshed in her hair. Yep, she'd been in the bushes having sex. BUT wait...she then had the audacity to ask us to enter the bushes in search of her panties!

Tuesday Twosome
Taxes:
1. "Eek, I owe" or "Show me the money!" Finally, I'm being shown some money. Woo - hoo!
2. "Finished already" or "It isn't the 15th yet, so why rush?!" I'm finished, but not because I was responsible and took care of it. Credit for filing early goes to my beloved.
3. "Taxes suck" or "I don't mind because some of it goes to social causes" Oh, I think they suck, big time!
4. "1040EZ" or "How the heck does anybody understand all this crap?" 1040EZ
5. "Receipts? What are those?" or "I keep everything just in case *knock on wood*" Oh girl, I keep everything, especially when you owe. You never know when it might come up to BITE YA!

X-Box
Those of you who read this blog know two things about me:
- I like to play video games, as is demonstrated by the purchase of a Game Cube.
- I thoroughly research purchases, sometimes months in advance, prior to buying.
So, it should be no surprise that I've finally decided to buy the X - Box gaming system. I've waited for the price to drop, it has. I've waited for more games to ship for this unit, they have. But most important, the new X - Box slated for release mid to late 2005 is going to have flash storage, instead of the hard drive it now has.
Microsoft's decision to use a flash drive is good for them, because flash drives are less expensive and problematic. It's bad for the consumer because there's less modification to be implemented. One of the first things many consumers do is buy a mod chip enabling games to be copied to the X - Box's hard drive for permanent storage. Eliminating the need to use the original game's CD/DVD. How many parents have scratched CDs/DVDs and ruined games? It can add up quickly and it's costly to replace the games.
So, for what it's worth, if you're considering a X - Box purchase, don't wait too much longer. Buy one before the hard drives disappear!

What would you do if...
1. Your best friend betray you? I'd end the friendship. It would have to be a major betrayal, though. Not for some gossipy reason.
2. Your life turned upside down one day? I've been there and done that, so I know I would forge ahead, taking each day one step at a time. I would give myself permission to grieve, when necessary, and be patient with myself.
3. You had no one you could trust? I'd find an outlet and solace in writing. I've always been one to write. Not necessarily in a diary book or anything, just in general.
4. Your boyfriend flirted with your friends right in front of you? He'd be history. Seriously. And any friend that reciprocated, would also be history. They could have each other!
5. You messed up a perfect friendship? I'd apologize and try to make amends, no excuses. I wouldn't seek an easy out.

Sunday Brunch
Let's Go Shopping!
1. How often do you go grocery shopping? Weekly.
2. What is the last thing you bought for yourself? Okay, I know this sounds real geeky but, I'm going for honesty here, folks. I bought a 128 mb ballpoint pen with USB Flash Drive. I wish it were 256 mb, but I can deal with 128.
In case anyone's interested: It's at Frys for $50.00, less a $20.00 mail-in rebate. Your total cost is $30.00. Sale ends Tuesday, April 13.
3. What do you like shopping for most often? Gadgets, music and DVDs.
4. Are you an impulse shopper? Most definitely not. I will research average prices for items and interested and will buy only when I find the best price. I never pay full price for anything, regardless of how badly I want/need it. I drive my spouse nuts! LOL
5. What is the last item you purchased? Kirigami books from the Midnight Special bookstore, Santa Monica, CA.

Let's Go Shopping!

Comment Feature
Thanks to Otto's kindness and helpfulness, I'm in the process of adding a Comment feature to the blog. I've wanted this feature since the beginning, but didn't how to implement it. Thankfully, Otto emailed me with some very helpful suggestions and advice and, if Blogger would simply stop crashing on me, I might have it working by tonight!
I tell you, the web community is a very helpful and sharing community. I've always found this to be true. I know, this is going way back to the dark ages of the 80s, but when it was simply BBSs and a text interface, often times people would meet face to face at BBQs and picnics. It was great to finally meet the people I communicated with. I miss this aspect a lot.
It's great that we're able to communicate with people around the world. The bad part is, it's such a large area and everyone's so spread out, we don't have the opportunity to get together in one place, in person. I'd like to meet Otto and give a big hug and say thank you for caring enough to help me.

Random Questions; Random Days
Today is "Read a Road Map Day." How are your map reading skills? My map reading skills are actually pretty decent. I can certainly make sense of a Thomas Guide or Atlas and I can read topography maps for my local mountains and hiking trails, having taken a survival training course during the winter! LOL However, I hope to never have to put my skills to work.
Does everyone know the Ten Essentials???
1. Map
2. Water
3. Extra food
4. Fire starter with matches
5. Flashlight
6. Knife
7. First Aid kit (which should include a whistle)
8. Rain gear (extra clothing)
9. Sunscreen & sunglasses
10. Compass
Some argue there's now an eleventh essential:
11. Cell phone (the problem with this is, there's a tendency to over depend on it and sacrifice one of the other essentials. As all experienced users know too well...."Can you hear me now?"

The Friday Five
1. What do you do for a living? I'm a glorified records clerk/paralegal.
2. What do you like most about your job? The attention to detail. I have to stay on the ball. Transposed letters and numbers can mean many wasted hours/days.
3. What do you like least about your job? The tediousness.
4. When you have a bad day at work it's usually because someone on the team has screwed up. Forgotten a detail. Forgotten to follow-up. Just dropped the ball entirely.
5. What other career(s) are you interested in? Criminal justice.
