Google Email

I received a pleasant surprise when I logged onto Blogger; an invitation to sign up and beta test their new email service called GMail. For those who may not know, Google's new email service has received a lot of flak for their privacy policy, which states that all email will be robotically monitored so ads, appearing in the email screen, can be tailored to the email's content. In fairness to Google, they clearly state how they're going about tailoring the ads. There is no deception on their part. If one is uncomfortable with the TOS, they need not sign up.

I'm keeping an open mind and have signed up for the service. I firmly believe that there is no privacy as regards email and I'll see how intrusive the ads are - if they are at all. If it's not to my liking, I can simply cease using the service. I understand the concern of privacy advocates, however, it's Google's server space and they're offering one gigabyte of email storage space. That's a lot of space and Google needs to earn revenue somehow. Yahoo and Hotmail's offerings are paltry by comparison.

Anyway, I'll keep you posted!
