Simplification & consolidation

In my quest to simplify my life in my physical space, I've also decided to do so in virtual space (or should I use the overused term cyberspace?) I'm consolidating the photoblog I started before Blogger offered a photo option. Basically, it's been relegated to being used for Baker's Dozen entries only. I long ago stopped participating in photo challenges because my photo blog takes up what extra time I have.

I'm feeling very good about the changes and am enjoying the streamlining. Sometimes what seems so challenging really isn't, only we don't realize it until after. Our first auction is underway via iSold it and we have five more items lined up and ready. Meanwhile, the garage is looking great and I feel like a huge weight's been lifted. I find myself applyiing the old rule: If I haven't used/missed it in a year, get rid of it!

My goal for the summer season is to simplify. I have five items total that I want to move on to someone else and I will feel the summer's been a success, provided I stick to my plan! The next challenge will be books. I need to read several in order to pass them on. I know there's a website that issues a tracking label that I can place in the book and leave the book at a public space for anyone to find. Does anyone know the URL for the site?

Take Me Back
In honour of Memorial Day in the US, all these questions relate to american artists.

1. List your three favourite american artists, with songs by each.
Bob Dylan Just like a Woman
Madonna Respect Yourself
CCR Sweet Hitch Hiker

2. List three songs with the word America or American in them.
Bruce Springsteen Born in the U.S.A
Don McLean American Pie
James Brown Living in America

3. List three influential American songwriters.
Neil Sedaka, Randy Newman, Bob Dylan.

The two songs that immediately came to mind were Born in the U.S.A. and American Pie. These were such obvious choices for me.

Random Ten

Sixties music makes think of fun and the beach. The beach is where you go on a hot day and I like ice cream when it's a scorcher.

10 songs that sum up your weekend...or were on your weekend playlist...and one picture that relates back. (oh, and if you feel like it, tell us why you picked the songs you did)

Spouse is a child of the sixties. Every so often, sixties music fills the house and we're totally retro! LOL

- The Drifters Under the Boardwalk
- The Shangri-Las Leader of the Pack
- Shirley Ellis The Name Game
- The Beach Boys Help Me Rhonda
- The Righteous Bros. You've Lost that Loving Feelin'
- Sam the Sham Wooly Bully
- Sonny & Cher I Got You Babe
- The Toys A Lover's Concerto
- The Zombies She's Not There
- The Marketts Out of Limits

Baker's Dozen

- Ah yes, a double scoop ice cream sundae on a hot spring day. Now that's the ticket!

- Checking out the newest small business in my city: iSold it! An eBay trading assistant seller. After cleaning the garage, I have stuff to sell and uh, unload. These businesses are sprouting up like weeds. Let's see how long they last. We have three within a 10 mile radius.

- Loving my cable's VOD option and enjoying season one of Showtime's Huff.

- Fry's had disappointing sales this week, so I guess Boo is happy.

- Wooo, a delicious homemade pizza and Henry Wiengard's Vanilla Cream soda. Used to be one had to travel to the specialty soda pop store in Highland Park. Thankfully, Ralph's market is now carrying the sodas.

- Grocery shopping with Mom and dining at our former favorite Chinese restaurant. Seems subtle changes like new server staff, smaller portions and a decrease in food quality spelled its demise for us. The restaurant's matron has passed responsibility to number one son.

- Yea, we're finally back at our favorite Farmer's Market for pozole. Our jam man hooked spouse up with apricot jam.

- Divesting myself of videos I already have in DVD. I'm trying to streamline and simplify. Let someone else enjoy Con Air, The Rock and Rumble in the Bronx.

- We have a litter of three kittens hanging around our house. They meow for attention, but upon spotting humans, run like the dickens! I do not want to encourage them to stay, so we have not fed or petted them. It's hard standing my ground, though. LOL

- Dropping off our first eBay item for auction: a leaf blower at the i-Sold It Trading Assistant store. I haven't the time or patience for shipping and handling, long lines at the post office, responding to email inquiries, etc. iSold It takes care of everything. Items must be assessed at a minimum $30 value or iSold It won't accept it. Auctions last for one week only, with no reserve bid option, so I'll report back on my experience.

- Celebrating the Memorial Day holiday by feasting on crab cakes, BBQ'd steaks marinated in mom's secret recipe, baked potatoes, roasted corn on the cob and a oh so decadent Banberry pie from Polly's. Yea baby, let's herald Summer!

- We're finally doing it....we're dumping dial up for DSL. A local company is offering an outstanding rate to customers of one particular Bell company. We qualify and we're jumping ship. I'll hate losing the email address I've had for 13 years but, everything's impermanent anyway.

The great rush to depart the city, causes the same effect on return. These bikes don't look like they're secured well.

A Day in My Life
Images from around my city during my walks. The one that disturbs me most is the constant development. Everywhere I look, new condos are being built and increasing the density in my community. We're still a Mayberry R.F.D. kind of town, but I fear it will not last.

New Season of Shows on horizon

Anyone who reads my blog knows that I watch very little network television, but am a huge cable TV viewer. At long last my shows are returning after hiatus and it's going to be a great summer. Not because of the shows, but because when I need some downtime, I can view my tapings and watch something good! LOL

The 4400
The Dead Zone
Stargate SG1
Stargate Atlantis
Six Feet Under

Are any of these your favorites?

Hutch's BBQ - Pasadena, CA

I don't know about you, but I'm guilty of passing by eateries and exclaiming, "Someday, I'm gonna stop there to eat." Such has been the case with Hutch's. I've passed this establishment for like, three years, and never stopped. We finally did last Wednesday and wouldn't you know, I didn't have my camera. All I had was my Palm Zire 71 so, bear with me.

We went back this week and this time I had my camera, but the place was hopping. Hutch's is a small restaurant and I was too intimidated to snap photos. Many folks don't appreciate someone snapping photos as they eat, know what I mean? The first exterior shot was shot on the second visit with a Canon, the rest with the Zire 71.

A great place for spicy Jamaican cuisine and delightful jerk chicken.

Small, cozy tables.

The quaint view from our table.

The jerk chicken sandwich with fries and baked beans was the bomb.

You can't tell very well, but that's a rattan-like curtain separating the room.

Computers: Love 'em & hate 'em

Thank God that I have more than one computer in the household. I embarked on a new challenge today - in my inifinite wisdom - and wound up eating crow. I decided to upgrade the desktop's memory, a simple task I've performed before on other systems. No big deal, right? Wrong!

For some reason, that I've yet to figure out, the hard drive will not boot. After installing the memory and powering the computer I receive the error message "No operating system found." That's it, nothing more. I can't boot in safe mode, I did a scandisk with no errors found, etc.

I swear, all I did was install memory. I didn't go anywhere near the hard drive. The system was disconnected. I didn't zap it with static electricity. I was grounded. So the non-event turned into an event. An event I was not happy about. LOL Spouse, being spouse and having been around me long enough to know best, quickly got lost and stayed away from me for the next three hours.

Three hours later, I still have nothing new and improved to report. Of course, I'm much calmer now and have found humor in this event. What will I do now? Well, I'm not sure; it sits on the desk taken apart and glaring at me. Summoning me to, "Make a move, why doncha?" Maybe tomorrow, I'm too beat tonight.

Mid-Week Music
Road trip!

What music do you like best for a roadtrip? Do you like relaxing music to get you into that kicked-back vacation mode, or songs that really get you revved up & excited?

I like music that envelopes and loses me. Music like Led Zep, The Beatles Zero 7, The Shins, The Pixies. It doesn't necessarily have to be loud or a specific genre, just music that I can easily get lost and caught up in.

Happy Anniversary Buddah

Today's my boy's first anniversary post radiation for his thyroid. He's very much like a kitten again, a kitten of 12 years! He loves running around, wandering outside with supervision, of course, and playing hide n seek. He helps keep me up when I'm feeling a little down and he's my computer companion. LOL He's the best fur companion I've ever had!

Take Me Back Tuesday
Ahhh...the difference a long weekend makes to the soul.

Well, it would have been busy as hell if had worked out. But that is another story.

So now we meme.

In honour of it being Victoria Day Weekend here in Canada, it's all about the Brits.

1. Name your three favourite British bands and a song from each of them.
Procol Harum Conquistador
Hermans Hermits Mrs. Brown
Eric Burdon & The Animals When I was Young
The Moody Blues Nights in White Satin

These are my actual three, but since they appear elsewhere!
The Kinks All Day and All of the Night
The Stones Gimme Shelter
Rod Stewart Maggie May
Honorary mention to the Fab Four....The Beatles. I mention them almost weekly, so I wanted to mix it up a bit!

2. Name your three favourite British front men.
Elton John
Freddie Mercury
David Bowie

3. Name three bands from the original British Invasion in the late 50's early 60's.
The Beatles
The Kinks
The Rolling Stones
The Dave Clark Five
Donovan

Bonus question:
Lyrically speaking, here's the song:

"Sunset doesn't last all evening, a mind can blow those clouds away" The most spiritual Beatle, George Harrison wrote All Things Must Pass.

Wow, a fabulous - fabulous - meme this week. Thanks, gals.

Thumb or Pen Flash Drives

We were laughing the other day about how many peeps we know own and carry with them a thump or pen flash drive. The average capacity is 256 megs and they are so compact and come in handy in case of an emergency. So what do I carry on mine? Well, my 128 meg holds the following applications: Spybot Search & Destroy, AdAware, AVG Anti-virus, Smart Photo Recovery, Belarc Advisor, Sygate software firewall, Firefox, Irfanview and Strip Mail.

The idea is that if I stumble upon someone who has a virus, spyware or photo recovery problem (and I have), I can assist them in a heartbeat. Irfanview and Strip Mail are two small but handy utilities for photos and cleaning up email before forwarding, respectively. I may look geeky for having a thumb drive, but that's okay. I like being prepared! LOL What are your main utilities that save you time and again?

The Merry Wives of Windsor

10 songs that sum up your weekend...or were on your weekend playlist...and one picture that relates back. (oh, and if you feel like it, tell us why you picked the songs you did)

All of my music this weekend came from the Renaissance Faire and was performed live by a variety of groups, many of them acapella. I don't know the title of any of them; not a one. I do have a photo, though and can tell you that all of the songs were bawdy!

Our sad representation of a river. It's flanked by railroad tracks and industrial warehouses for much of its trek. It's not like Angelenos can say, "Let's head to the river for the day!" We'd find nothing to do or there.

Renaissance Pleasure Faire

Whew, we went to the faire today and my God, was it a scorching hot one! The temps were easily in the 95 degree range and I don't know how the actors and participants could withstand the heat, while wearing leather, suede, velour, multiple layers of clothing and hats! I expected to see a lot of persons in the first aid booth, but happily did not.

We watched four plays (so yes, you're off the hook Mojo!) and drank water like there was no tomorrow. I am experiencing my first sun burn and it's painful and uncomfortable. I've never taken a shower where you don't scrub! LOL Up to this point, I'd also always been very fortunate that my natural brown skin never burned. Alas, that's ended.

The faire was very crowded and entertaining, with non-stop plays, comedy skits and singing. There were many unique items of glass, leather, flowers, iron, suede, and ribbon for sale and a colorful assortment of tapestries. If you were so inclined, you could buy a costume at the faire and dress the part. Though, I did not see as many folks buying, as I did browsing. The parasol booth did brisk business selling at $20 - $35 depending on the size and material of your umbrella.

Long Beach is celebrating Gay Pride.
Fry's Celebrating its 20th Anniversary

The line for $ .25 hot dog and soda is long but moved quickly. Our new purchases!

I love Friday's and I especially love the Friday Fry's ad! They're having a one day sale of extra savings and we had to go. Luckily for me, it was my day off and spouse took the day, as well. Remember the worked weekend? Well, it paid off this weekend!

First stop, spouse wanted a Muvo C100 MP3 player too, after listening to me rave and brag about it. But wait it gets better, after a $20 mail-in rebate, we'll have paid a paltry $39.99 for this awesome player. $39.99 is such a steal and I told the Creative rep this when he spoke to me. I thought I got a great buy when I paid $59.99 for mine!

Next, we also bought a 512 meg Memorex flash drive. Spouse gets to use flash drives at work cuz they have USB. My job's still in the Jurassic phase...we use Windows 98 (not even the SE edition) and our computers do not have USB capability. Yea, we're in 2005 and have no USB, go figure. Oooh, here's the best part, after $20 mail-in rebate, we'll have paid $19.99 for a 512 meg flash drive. The prices on these things have dropped so fast, it's unbelievable.

Next, I've been searching for a powered USB hub. I wanted a D-Link like my seven port hub on the notebook. However, leave it to spouse to eyeball a four port Belkin hub for $19.99! No rebate. No sale. That's the regular price and I was so happy, I scooped that up too! At check out the clerk reminded us to buy a hot dog and soda for $ .25 - yea, you've read right 25 cents. So if you're near a Fry's, it's worth your time to check the ad and see if there's anything of interest to you.

Okay, it's time to rest for awhile and then get ready for a function. It's job related and spouse is speaking, so I'm very excited and looking forward to it. Everyone have a fantastic evening and I hope your days been a good one!

We're in the mix now...

My little computing companion and supervisor!

Everything's progressing just fine and things are running smoothly. Luckily for spouse, unfortunately for me, Fry's didn't have anything enticing in today's ad. I was so hoping they'd offer a hard drive Windows based MP3 player at an unbeatable price. Alas, the ad's pretty lame this week. Although, with Memorial Day around the corner, I'm hoping they pull out all the stops!

Mojo was telling me about Mr. Wallaby and his 15 year old daughter's birthday gift. He bought her a Rio MP3 player (not sure what capacity, but at least 5 gigs), which cost about $250. Well, daughter opened it, copied songs to it, and promptly dropped it - yea, it's a dead door stop! Daughter had it all of one day - one day.

So Mojo suggested Mr. Wallaby contact Rio and tell them it was defective and he'd like another. Instead, he was honest and told the rep that daughter dropped it. Rio told him they could only exchange for a refurbished unit. Mr. Wallaby told his daughter to pack the Rio up, address and ship it. This was three weeks ago and to date, daughter's done nothing towards exchanging the unit.

Moral: When you don't have to pay for something, you don't care how much it cost. And care even less about taking care of it. It's no sweat off of your brow, so why care?!

Ahhhh!

Our gorgeous So Cal weather has returned, a little late for last night's freezing game and 6-2 loss, but I'm so happy it's back today. We've been enjoying ourselves in the sunlight and the longer days. I'm so excited because it's the middle of May and summer - my favorite season - is almost upon us.

Have I mentioned that I bought the Dave Matthews Band new CD Stand Up? It's a lot jazzier than his previous stuff and I like it. It's a nice change from their earlier work and I like it when artists expand and experiment. A good example of this evolution is Elton John. Initially, all of his tunes were pop with a smattering of rock thrown in for good measure.

His music took a dip and became more melancholy, reflecting what he was experiencing, and then he emerged with soundtracks to a various Disney movies. Along the way, he lost some of his core fan base, not everyone digs orchestral music, but he equally acquired new fans with his experimentation. Elton's willing to take risks and explore, which is what I like about him.

Take Me Back Tuesday
It's all about MTV!

Who are the first Mtv VJs that you can remember? Martha Quinn, Adam Curry and Nina Blackwood. Curry is now into podcasting and has a good show.

Name 3 tv shows that aired on Mtv. (were any of them actually music related?) Darn, I'm so bad with titles....there was one where the host would approach total strangers on college campuses (mostly) and ask them to perform some dumb/sick feat for: $50, no - not enough....okay, $100, still no bite....$150. And the person would do it. Some kids would do it right away for a mere $50 and the spectators would be cringing, making faces and saying, "No way, dude!" The other show's where several kids lived in one house and we'd witness their antics and drama. And of course, how can I forget Punked!

What bands do you think would be nothing without Mtv? Duran Duran (one of the first bands to really embrace the emerging technology), Michael Jackson's Thriller put him over the top, Madonna became a household name both fans and parents recognized because of her videos, The Police made their trio known and, last but not least, Culture Club.

Bonus:

What is your favorite music video? Hands down Michael Jackson's Thriller. What I'd give to find it on DVD. I never bought the VHS version, either. :-( Of course, Duran Duran's Hungry Like a Wolf was total eye candy and awesome!
There's an idea, bands should issue a video compilation of their music videos. Can you imagine Duran Duran's? If this has been done, please, enlighten me.

I see these underground elevator trap doors around the city, but have yet to see one in use. Except for in the movies, of course.

Dodger Game tonight

It's a very funky overcast day today and it figures, since we're going to a Dodger game tonight. All last week and during the weekend we were in high eighty degree temps and nights hovered in the seventies. Tonight's the game and it's chilly. Damn! Recently, Dodger fans received a Code of Conduct after fans became unruly at a $2.00 Tuesday Night Fan Appreciation game.

Fans began throwing trash and drinks on the field and at players. A coupld of fist fights also broke out, with some spectators being struck by cups of beer. It's a sad day when fans need to be reminded how to behave. New restrictions about what fans can bring to a game are being enforced and I'm trying to figure out what applies. I don't know if I can take my camera. The walk from the parking lot to the entrance is a distance and if I'm turned back, I'm going to be mighty upset.

A Day in My Life
Time to get my legs waxed, so to Long Beach we go! They're celebrating Gay Pride this month as evidenced by the many businesses displaying the rainbow colors in support of the gay community.

Delusions of Control

My friend J.Lo has a sister-in-law (SIL) who had prearranged to buy Party Light merchandise from J.Lo. This has been ongoing for several months and SIL has been fairly reliable and responsible. J.Lo didn't mind helping out SIL because, although she's not blood family, J.Lo figured SIL wouldn't screw her.

Well, SIL ordered several hundred dollars of merchandise over the past two months and has not paid J.Lo. On Friday J.Lo was very upset about the problems this is causing between her husband and her. He blames J.Lo for trusting SIL to begin with and is making her life miserable. It's not like they can afford to carry the SIL. J.Lo's brother, acquiesces to his wife and doesn't want to "get involved".

We were talking about a persons perceived sense of control and power in certain situations. J.Lo feels her SIL is purposely causing drama because her life is so unhappy and out of control. This may or may not be the cause, but what I told J.Lo is how foolish her SIL is for burning the bridge she shared with J.Lo. No amount of damage control will erase the lost trust and respect J.Lo once had for her. It's gone. Why do some people have to go through life always pushing the envelope?

If I treat you with respect, damn right, I expect the same in return. But I also subscribe to the belief that Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me! J.Lo hasn't decided what she's going to do about the debt she's left with. Of course, SIL has possession of the merchandise, so that's a moot point. We left it at what goes around, comes around. A person can only burn so many bridges before they're singed themselves!

We were shocked when we happened upon this huge Laughing Buddha in an auto dealership. We live in a predominantly Asian community, so I guess Buddha's bringing the dealership good luck? When Mojo shouts, "Take a picture!", I figure it's something worth noting! LOL This guy's taller than the building and makes an impression.

I wish we could have different imagery as we traverse the city via freeway. Graf seems to be everywhere and on everything. What an eyesore!
