I have a lot of respect and appreciation for artists. I could never execute anything like this.

Top Five On Friday

Top 5 Spooky (Halloweenie-type) Songs

Okay, first a disclaimer, I can't think of any spooky songs. My selections are more fun and recognizable, but that's the best that I could do!

Thriller (Loved the video. A favorite of mine.)
The Monster Mash
Werewolves of London
The Addams Family theme
The Halloween film theme
Purple People Eater

And I can't forget the X-Files theme. An old favorite of mine that sadly lost its way and didn't finish on top.

Ramblings

It's Buddah's birthday month and now that he has his gift, my recliner's been relegated to Thrift Store status. I've lost my scary movie partner and have no one to squeeze. That's so wrong of him! Watched The Shining last night, Boo slept through it, and the film holds up very well. It's been so long, I'd forgotten most of it, which made it all the scarier to watch. The film's score is magnificent and from the opening scene, you know it's going to be a dark, suspenseful journey.

I've had it with Apple's iTunes. I don't like how it manages podcasts and have erased all the downloads it stole off of iPodder's settings. I've done the best I can to ensure that iTunes knows it is not to search for or download podcasts. I will see. iTunes may have cornered the market for buying music online, but it needs a lot of work when it comes to podcasts. Its directory is sorely lacking and the way it categorizes, stores and plays my selections is sub par.

Where are all the houses decorated for Halloween? There's also a dearth of Halloween parties. I usually know of two parties and many co-workers who are attending parties. This year, no one I know is hosting and co-worker's have no plans. They have to resort to going to a club and paying beaucoup bucks for the privilege of dressing up and partying. What's happening?

Of course, there's always the big party in We-Ho, but who wants to park 1-1/2 miles from the venue, wade through 100,000 drunk and partially naked people to party with total strangers? Hmmmm, that's sounding like a plan!

It's 6:00 a.m. and the carnival's coming to town. They're setting up as I'm driving to work.

The Eagles Concert

We hadn't been to an Eagles concert since the Hell Freezes Over Tour in the nineties. We drove to San Diego to see them and at that time, it was a good concert. After last night's concert, the Hell Freezes Over Tour pales in comparison.

This go round, the guys were in fine form (last night's being their fifth concert in the L.A. area) and seemed to genuinely enjoy themselves and have a good, fun time. The song arrangements were awesome, with an excellent sound system, fantastic camera work and a band that was ready to rock.

They seemed to have the synergy flowing and were in tune with each other, the music and the audience. Gone was the awkwardness and disconnectedness that existed on the Hell Freezes Over tour. These guys had exorcised their individual demons and played some damn good music!

The first set they played for one hour, then took a fifteen minute break. They began the second set by showing video footage of the band from the seventies. Then they played for an hour and 45 minutes and did three encores, each consisting of two songs. Desperado was the final song of the encores.

They also sang two new songs: One Day at a Time written for the tragedy of 9/11 and No More Cloudy Days a lovely ballad about relationships. As many concerts as we've attended together, Boo has never demonstrated so much emotion and elation. I thought I had a new spouse sitting beside me! LOL

Eagles Concert at Arrowhead Pond

So far it's been a busy and fun day. Boo took the day off and we accomplished a lot. We're all set for our final concert of 2005 - The Eagles. I'm excited and anxious and can't believe it's finally here. We've had the tix since like July or something and, though, hell's frozen twice for these guys, I'm hoping the entire gang's present tonight. No MIA's, please!

This will be a wonderful conclusion to a terrific day with one sad note: my 5.0 megapixel Canon S50 is in the shop. The selection dial options had rubbed off (ahem, a little too much use, me think!) and I was having to guess which setting was where. It's being shipped to Canada and the estimate is four to six weeks. As Boo reminds me, I have no luck, so likely it will be six weeks. I'm left with my old two megapixel Canon, which still works great.

In addition to replacing the dial, they're going to thoroughly clean it, check for and correct any other problems and calibrate it. The grand total will be $175, which believe me, I thought about and hesitated for a moment. Afterall, I could've applied that to the Canon S2 but, you know me, the S50's served me well and I can't retire it. I'll uh, just have to add to my collection!! LOL

Online Bullying

I read an interesting article in the New York Times about students being bullied online via instant messaging and on websites. Bullying has transcended the physical space into the virtual. I started reminiscing about my elementary and junior high school years. How much I hated - absolutely hated - junior high. You couldn't pay me enough to relive that period of my life. I was miserable!

My bullies were named Melinda Chavez and Nellie Otero, two gals who, when I look back, had the self esteem of slugs and desperately needed attention. Neither was pretty or remotely attractive and both had a need to be Queen B. (in this case, I don't mean the insect variety). Their sole purpose each school day was to make kids, like me, suffer.

Nellie bullied by blatantly overlooking me when it came time to pick players for teams. She never wanted me, though, no one knew with any certainty, how hard I could kick or hit a ball. Time after time, I was left on the bench watching the others play and have fun. Of course, if Nellie wouldn't choose, neither would the other team captain. So I daydreamed a lot, became even more perceptive about people and behavior and bided my time. That cow would need me someday and I'd let her have it then.

Melinda made it a daily ritual to always end up in the girls bathroom when I did. If it wasn't pushing or mean comments, it was a demand for money. If I was combing my hair, she'd grab my comb and throw it on the floor. When grabbing a paper towel, she'd slam me into the dispenser. It was always something each and every day. I spent a lot of time running and not using the bathroom. It's a miracle that my bladder's still healthy. LOL

My cousin Josie, always knew I was being bullied and offered to help. Of course, identifying my bullies and having the "situation taken care of", would only worsen my plight. What little patch I had, I was determined to keep. I'd never find my footing this route. So I never told her who my tormenters were and I continued studying them and studied hard. Everyone has a weakness, I had to identify it and then use it to my advantage.

One fateful day the teacher chose the benchwarmers to be on the opposing team. During kickball, Nellie pitched the ball and I kicked it hard. All of my anger and spite was in that kick and I aimed it at her fat head. The gods were with me too, I connected! All the kids laughed and Nellie cried. As for Melinda, she pushed me one time too many and I snapped. I punched her in the nose and gave her a bloody nose. When she threatened to tell, I told her to go ahead. Then all the kids would know she had the shit beat out of her! She never said a word.

Neither were very good students, academically speaking, so they were forced to sit in the front of class - where the teacher could watch them. Once I discovered my footing, I made it a point to sit behind them. Melinda would nervously peer over her shoulder at me to see what I might do to her. Nellie tried to toughen up and fluff her feathers, but she'd been deflated and she knew it.

Years later, I saw Nellie at a club and looked her straight in the eye. She kind of remembered me but couldn't quite place me. I smirked and kept walking. She had the look of someone who life had beaten down and she looked old. Karma, baby. Karma!

Instant Music

This vendor was demoing his heart out, as he tried to convince fair attendees to part with $50.00 and buy his Instant Music product.

With his product, I could easily and confidently rip my vinyl, cassettes or 8-Tracks (yep, he said even 8 Tracks) to MP3 or digital format for burning CDs or copying to my iPod. No one inquired how they'd play their 8 Tracks.

He attracted quite a crowd too. Fifteen or so, nestled three deep into his small area, observing his slides and listening to what were supposedly ripped samples of music stored on his notebook computer.

Alas, his spiel ended, the crowd dispersed and no one parted with $50.00. The white box (left side of photo) is what $50.00 would have bought me. The ads claimed As Seen on TV, but I'd never heard of it. Anyone??

10 songs that sum up your weekend...or were on your weekend playlist...and one picture that relates back. (oh, and if you feel like it, tell us why you picked the songs you did)

Boo and I were watching TV when we both noticed an image. Can you see it? I'll tell you tomorrow where to look, if you don't. If you think you do, tell me where and what you see.

These are songs the iPod shuffled and I liked it a lot, becaue it was dance, rock, R&B and soul all mixed in one. I could go from mellow to dance to happy and back. Sort of like this weekend's weather: sunny, cloudy, smattering of rain and sunny again!

~ U2 Crumbs on Your Table
~ Prince When Doves Cry
~ Eurythmics Sweet Dreams
~ Fiona Apple Pale September
~ James Brown Papa Don't Take No Mess
~ John Legend Let's Get Lifted
~ Luther Vandross Hit It Again
~ Sting If You Love Somebody
~ Barry White Your Sweetness
~ The Stones Gimme Shelter

iPod & iTunes Review

It's been about a month and I'm still ripping music to the 20 gig iPod. I am impressed with its sound quality and ease of operation. Typical of Apple, it is a gorgeous piece of tech and truly, I can say very sexy! LOL It is stylish, sleek and eye catching - a real head turner.

The thing I'm less impressed with is the inability to delete items from the iPod on the fly. It would be nice to listen to a podcast and delete it when finished, much as I do on my Creative Muvo C100. I don't understand having to connect the iPod to the computer to delete entries. For the lack of this feature, I listen to podcasts on the Muvo while at work. I finish one, delete it and the change is immediately reflected, alerting me to how much space I have left for new podcasts.

Another bummer, I do not care for iTunes and the way it has its tentacles in everything. I used iPodder to download podcasts to the Muvo. Once the iPod and iTunes arrived, the fight for dominance raged unabated, until iTunes successfully copied the Podcast download information from iPodder into iTunes. I now have duplicates galore! Thanks, Apple.

I still like iPodder, prefer it over iTunes proprietary list of which podcasts are hip or in. For example, podcasters outside the U.S. may have trouble being listed because their credit card information isn't accepted by Apple. I like freedom of choice for those who don't know me.

I also don't want to port AAC files to my Muvo and certainly have no intention of re-ripping Apple's AAC files to MP3 for the Muvo. I've disabled iTunes again, so hopefully it will cease insisting on downloading podcasts. I am the user and should be in control - Apple take note!

Let there be no doubt that the Muvo is still receiving heavy use. It hasn't been retired. It's not being neglected. It accompanies me to work daily. I haven't taken to bringing the iPod yet, I'm worried about theft. The agency I work for isn't located in the most desirable section of L.A. and the white earbuds attract lots of attention!
