I live in Southern California and live the digital lifestyle. I love technology, engage in social networks and thanks to the Amazon Kindle enjoy reading again. I listen to many podcasts and am interested in the paranormal. I don't go ghost hunting or anything like that, but I love reading, viewing and listening to a great fright!

I never realized what a huge difference DSL would make in my life. I'd been a dial up customer since 1984 and until recently, never gave much thought to upgrading. It was suiting my purposes just fine. Webpages were loading fast enough, until they began becoming more graphics laden.
I didn't desire to watch much video, I could easily watch it on the big screen TV. But then, time became more of an issue the busier my life became and the CNN videos were taking an eternity to stream. When they would stream, I saw a lot of pixelation and mouths moving out of synch with the words.
So what finally motivated me....music. I like music - no surprise, right? - and many artists are offering free MP3s of their work, as well as the plethora of mash ups. And mash ups can be huge files that take forever to download successfully. Seven out of ten times, my mash up downloads were unsuccessful, so you know I couldn't live with that! LOL
Followed by Podcasts. Those wonderful, creative, quirky MP3s that sometimes span two hours. Well there was no way I was going to download them on a dial up connection. So, to DSL I went at a ridiculously low price and I haven't looked back. One thing about living in L.A. is we have serious competition between the cable and Bell providers, not to mention inside fighting among the Bell's themselves. All of this spells blessings for us - the consumers. I am so digging it, too!

I haven't begun working on the neighbor's mix CD yet, been too busy with other things. The heat, Dr. Who and the iPod have been competing for my attention, so Emmet's CD will have to wait. I really need to stop finding more stuff to do and just chill. Autumn's just around the corner and with it the crazy holidays. I'm looking forward to decorating and need to get in the garage and get the Halloween decorations together. Whoa, I've just added one more thing! LOL
I finished filling Guapo's Muvo with maneuvers-type music. There's a lot of dance, techno and rock on it. It's a good combination and probably about four hours worth of music. He's a quarter shy of one gig and this should keep him very busy. He was shocked when I explained why the music stopped playing and I think the gym bud is not going to have a good workout day! Uh oh, the gym bud is his 17 year old stepson.

On the home front, I've reconnected the notebook to the wireless network. I tried restoring to an earlier point and that failed miserably. Undaunted, I then uninstalled the driver and software, shut down completely, started her back up and installed the wireless card software again. All is well thank goodness and Boo's happy!
I returned from lunch to find my friend Guapo's Muvo sitting on my desk with a lone CD and a 512 meg SD card. He'd told me that his music stopped playing after he'd loaned it to a friend at the gym. I opened it up to switch out the 256 meg card and install the 512 meg - no card. Yep, whoever borrowed it ripped him off so no wonder he heard no music. :-( Some people are just plain mean and cold.
Guapo's going on three weeks training after the Labor Day holiday and he wants music that will keep him going during maneuvers. I figure some dance music for sure, any other suggestions???

~ Aretha Franklin & George Michael Knew You Were Waiting (for me)
~ Peter Frampton Baby (Something's Happenin')

~ Closets. Those darn closets. They're like monsters. They suck things in and you never know where the hell they went!
~ Taking the antique wall sconce for repair and hoping it turns out half way decent.
~ "Oh so nice to see you again! Are you having the same thing you had last time?"
It's sad when the Thai restaurant owner greets us like old friends and remembers our last order.
~ "I cannot believe we've been here three times and continue to get lost. How is this possible!?"
In search of Sam's Club on a 103 degree day.
~ Sam's Club samples are the best. We had lunch by sampling what they had! LOL
~ "Why would I pay that when I could go to Office Depot and pay less?"
Boo: "O.D.'s having a sale and you didn't say anything?"
"Since last Sunday. They probably don't have anymore and I'm not driving all over the place looking for one!"
Boo: "Let's go. We're driving to Monrovia."
"Alright. But if they don't have it, then it wasn't meant to be and we forget about it. Agreed?"
Discussion pre-iPod purchase.
~ Yea Baby! I finally bought my hard drive MP3 player without planning. A rarity for me. I normally would have to research this and take two to three weeks to decide where to buy it. Thank you, Boo!
~ Unwrapping the iPod and feeling like a child let loose in a candy store. LOL
~ Ripping songs in iTunes and filling the iPod with music and podcasts. I've got to have my podcasts. So easy. So convenient. So, so slick!
~ Shopping Best Buy for a DVD/CD rack. It holds up to 330 mixed media and Boo's decided that we need to consolidate. At $99.00 it was within our budget and a hot item. The clerk told us we were the fourth purchase in a row.
~ I think it's too hot for folks to be shopping. We hit Target and walked away with everything we wanted and no waiting in line! How often does that happen?
~ Dining at Noodle Town where we've befriended the owner. She introduced us to fried banana Vietnamese style. It was the best fried banana I've ever tasted. A definite dessert item on our next visit.

I am digging the iPod something fierce. I've been ripping CDs to iTunes and have transferred 4 gigs of music to the iPod. It's awesome having so much music in one portable, convenient location. The ease of use is awesome and I need to deprogram and adjust to the Apple way - simplicity. I began in the Apple camp and then switched to Windows in the 90s. My next purchase? I want a Mac mini and I will have it by next summer. I'm waiting to see how Apple's conversion to Intel chips bodes for the new Macs. Apple has always excelled at excellent design, simplicity and style - it's no wonder they stole the thunder in the MP3 player arena!

You know I talk about there being no accidents in the Universe. Everything happens for a reason. So this morning when we finally caught a break and opportunity to enjoy our Saturday, we seized the day!
The electrician was here at 8:30 this morning again because we didn't pass the inspection by the city. I know he received five fix it citations and did a lot of mumbling.
We're in 95 plus degree temps and he turned off all of our power. All of it. We sweltered for two hours and then celebrated that we will hopefully, not see him again! Off we went to Sam's Club to fill a prescription.
We ate lunch - yep, you got it - by sampling everything Sam's Club offered and they sell iPods. Only the Shuffles, the 4 gig model and the Bose speaker set. Boo inquired why didn't I buy the 4 gig and I said for the price they're asking I can buy a 20 gig.
The next thing I know, we're headed for an Office Depot office supply store. They're having a 20% discount on the 20 gig iPod. Mind you, this sale's been on since last Sunday. I tell Boo, if this location doesn't have it, then it's not meant to be and I'm not worrying about it.
We walk in, ask if they have any, I'm still standing at the entrance ready to exit and the gal says they have one. I got an iPod...woo hoo!...the last thing I expected to get not only today, of all days, but this entire year. Boo, this is my Christmas gift and I'm dead serious!
I'm off to read the manual and hook Cherry (yep, that's her name!) up to the computer. Uh oh, I've ripped music for my flash MP3 player in .wma files, so I now need to re-rip them to MP3 - doh! I'm a mess. LOL Ah well, not even this realization can get me down.

Top five "Peace"ful songs. (Interpret as you like)
~ Cat Stevens Peace Train
~ John Lennon Give Peace a Chance
~ Eagles Peaceful, Easy Feeling
~ Sly & The Family Stone Hot fun in the Summertime
~ The Beach Boys California Girls
Music related I visited Back Masking and was humored by the limited selection. I couldn't hear satanic messages in selected snippets, but maybe you will. First parents were saying rock n roll was the root of evil , now it's video games. What I want to know is, how the hell would you play a vinyl LP backwards in the first place?

Are You Corporate Ghetto?
You know you are CORPORATE GHETTO if the following are true:
1. You don't officially start working in the morning until you read your emails.
2. Not only do you know all the security guards, janitors and cafeteria workers, ONE OF THEM HAS ASKED YOU OUT ON A DATE.
3. Your version of a conference call is when you call your friends and plan what you are doing for the weekend.
4. The only time your man/woman picks you up from work is on payday.
5. Friends and family members call you at work to cuss you out because you didn't answer your phone quick enough.
6. You paint your nails at your desk.
7. When you are on a personal call you laugh so loud your co-workers on the other side of the office come and ask you what's so funny.
8. On casual Friday, you wear your best Pelle Pelle, Tommy Hilfiger, DKNY shirts and jeans (ladies-tightest jeans) everyone in your office thinks you are advertising for them.
9. You have pictures on your wall with you and your friends at the club.
10. You talk about how much money you make.
11. To beat the system, you have codes for personal calls that let's someone know to call you right back. (let the phone ring two times and call me right back)
12. You give your out-of-town friends your company's 1-800 number.
13. Before calling in sick, you rehearse your sick voice and sick story several times out loud.
14. Coworkers inquire how your father's surgery went that required you to be out for days and you haven't seen your daddy since he left your momma when you were born.
15. You use the company's postage machine to stamp your letters to your mate in the penitentiary.
16. Your kid's school supplies all have your company insignia on them.
17. You can't function straight when the batteries go dead in your desk radio.
18. You call in sick on payday Friday and send your cousin to pick up your paycheck.
19. You contribute $1 to the office Christmas party, eat the most food and take a platter of lunchmeat and potato salad home to your family for dinner.
20. Before someone uses your telephone at your desk, they have to wipe the chicken grease off the handset.
21. You call in sick on Friday because you went out on Thursday.
22. You don't like your supervisor and a couple other coworkers and you tell them off on a regular basis and wonder why you haven't been promoted.
23. You get your haircut/hair done on lunch and come back two hours later.
24. You cuss your creditors out for calling you at work.
25. You come to work on Friday's dressed for the club.
26. Your kids call your job and say to the operator, "Let me speak to my Mama"
27. You eat sunflower seeds at your desk.
28. If you are sitting there reading this instead of getting your work done.
Later tonight, I'll note which numbers I identify with. Which ones will you own?

Friendship
Life is funny, isn't it? I've been vexed for weeks about how I didn't handle a situation and then today I met up with an old friend and everything fell into place.
On August 2nd (I can be that precise because it was the day of the Led Zepagain noontime concert), as Twi and I disembarked from the redline, in a flash I saw an old high school pal Linda. Now it's been years since I've heard from/about, let alone seen her. Yet, she looked very much the same, which left me feeling sad.
It looked like she was still in the same place. She hadn't moved. She inquired directions of another passenger and I turned to say something to Twi. In that instant, Linda was gone, the doors closed behind me and the train departed. I walked to my concert and Linda's haunted me since.
I've wondered why didn't I speak to her? I had time. Granted, they were seconds, but why didn't I at least try? Why did I choose to ignore her? Was I embarrassed to acknowledge her in Twi's presence? Was I worried about my reputation? Have I lost myself?
I don't have any answers - just questions. What I do have is some peace, at last. God has brought two other friends back into my life, both in need of a shoulder. Stupes (it's a long story, she knows it's her nickname and doesn't mind) is having relationship problems with her boyfriend of nine years. He has suddenly discovered that her two children are first and foremost in her life. Go figure!
Roadrunner is still coping with the death of her mother and five adult siblings who can't get their shit together. Her siblings have always, always been adult babies. They're irresponsible, never have money to do anything and always on the lookout for a freebie or hand out. She now has two adult brothers living with her and not one is paying a penny for a damn thing!
So as I sat in the terrace, full sunshine blazing on me, feeling the heat penetrate and warm my soul, Roadrunner happened upon me. Bless her heart, she was on a day off and on her way to visit brother one, who's hospitalized. He's unaware that brother two is now occupying the bedroom he's called home for eight months.
I sat and listened. We talked about spirituality. I listened. Finding balance. I listened. Her anger and mounting resentment about the imposition on her life. I listened. Her struggle to accept that her mother is gone. I listened.
And then it me: Perhaps - I was never meant to connect with Linda. She was a marker for me to gauge my life by. If I truly believe that there are no coincidences, then our non-meeting was meant to be. Just as I was meant to be sitting on the bench when Roadrunner walked by.
"God knew I needed to see you, sis! I needed someone to listen to me. Someone to make me smile and laugh. Someone that I could talk to about real things. None of that 'how ya doing' shit as they smile and keep walking!" I smiled and then laughed because in my heart, I knew she was right.
Go figure!

A lot of todays rap lyrics leave me scratching my head. Others, just leave me shocked by what is being said. Then there are others when I wonder what's the meaning of this song? It happens with rock songs mostly. That's why Song Facts is an awesome find and resource that you should not only check out, but bookmark!

I had my MP3s to keep me sane and entertained. My poor Buddah tried to sleep and from the looks of it, he's having to "dig in" to escape the drilling, sawing, etc.!
~ James Brown Papa Don't take no Mess
~ Luther Vandross Love the One You're With
~ Zero 7 Waiting Line
~ Peter Frampton I'm in You
~ Prince Raspberry Beret
~ Thievery Corp. Lebanese Blonde
~ Tina Turner What's Love got to do with It
~ Terence Trent D'Arby Dance Little Sister
~ The Talking Heads Swamp
~ Sting If I ever Lose My Faith in You

Tonight was the final episode of HBO's Six Feet Under and I must confess to being caught totally off guard. No other show in television has ever wrapped the way this series did. It left me crying, which I haven't done in years, at least not over a t.v. show. The creators left nothing to the viewer's imagination which is both shocking, unusual and left me feeling very sad. I'm not giving spoilers, you'll need to view it and tell me if you feel the same.

The poor guy worked from 9:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. with only an hour break. It was a hot day with him having to climb to the roof, crawl through attic space, sweat in a dingy basement and watch himself every step of the way. I am so glad those old fuses are gone forever. I will not miss them!
We're onto phase three of this project which has the electric company signing off on the work and providing new wiring to the pole. After that, the electrician can move the meter box from inside the house to outside. So it appears, we have one more Saturday tied up!

One observation: It would be hard to navigate 1000 songs without a screen. Flash storage in a streamlined iShuffle sounds great. Lightweight, no moving hard drive, unobtrusive, but the navigation. I'd buy it if it's competively priced...say $179, especially with no screen.

Desperate...
Houswives is now caught up and I'm very disappointed to find that I missed an episode or two. I honestly can't tell. I saw the episode involving Mr. Solis' arrest by the FBI, Gabriela telling John's (the gardener) mother that she's the housewife girlfriend and the nosey neighbor lady being murdered by Zach's father.
The next episode had Mr. Solis already indicted and serving an eight month plea bargain, Mama Solis dead, Bree's son in a camp, Lynette without a nanny, and John living in an apartment. Can anyone fill me on what went down? I finally catch up only to have blanks.
The electrician will be here later today, so it's unlikely I'll post again. I hope he finishes the job today, because I don't want to dedicate another Saturday to this project. There's nothing like having to wait around and house sit. It's not like we can watch TV, listen to music, surf the Net, etc. I guess it's board games and the trusty old MP3 player - thank God for gadgets! LOL Everyone have a great weekend!

Top five "colorful" songs
~ Boz Scaggs Painted Bells
~ Brothers Johnson Strawberry Letter 23
~ Eric Johnson Red House
~ Jill Scott Golden
~ Joe Satriani Flying in a Blue Dream
Just because there are more possibilities than one, here's a different take on colorful:
The Talking Heads Making Flippy Floppy
Prince Erotic City
Sheena Easton Sugar Walls
50 Cent Candy Shop
Ying Yang Twins The Whisper Song
Is there any rhyme or reason why folks feel compelled to speak to someone who's clearly engaged? It never fails that when I'm wearing my buds and listening to music, someone will approach me for assistance or simply to chat.
Hello! I'm busy. I really would like to remain engrossed in my music. I don't appreciate the interruption.
"Oh, I'm sorry...I just have one question."
So what, one question's better than two, so I should excuse you?
It's probably the smiling that does me in. I can't help smiling when I'm groovin'. It's natural. My favorite tunes make me smile and take me places I want to be. I'm going to make a conscious effort to look mean or angry. Maybe then they'll leave me alone.

When I bought my first computer with a DVD player, I thought it was a dumb idea. I don't travel much, so I have little need for watching DVDs on the computer. I already had two DVD players in the house and a big screen TV, so why would I want to watch anything on a small computer screen? The new desktop arrived and it also had a DVD player/CDRW combo, the CDRW's a must have, but again, I could leave the DVD player.
Well, yesterday while I tried to view a S-VCD on my DVD players, I finally figured out what computer DVD players are good for. The only way to view the S-VCD was to download the proper codec onto my desktop and view it on the 17 inch monitor. I was styling, enjoying my S-VCD and greatly, greatly relieved that I had two options about where to view it. I never knew a S-VCD could look so good. I'd swear that it's broadcast quality or better.
Suddenly, sitting in front of my computer viewing a movie/show wasn't so dumb after all. Now I could understand and appreciate why a computer DVD player is a must have. I was prepped in my comfortable chair, water for sipping at the ready, Boo in an adjacent chair and the glow of the show filling the den. What show you ask? Why, the good Doctor, that's Who. Doctor Who has been resurrected in the U.K. and I am able to enjoy him in the states. How could a gal ask for anything more!?!

My little inspector helps me unwrap the package!
I've been waiting for a package to arrive and it's here. Everyday I've been going to the post office anticipating its arrival and each day I return home feeling sad. It's been weeks - actually, months - since I've gone to the post office daily. I know Boo's been perturbed with me for my lack of visits. I'll say one thing for SAP, when he packs something, he packs it well. Nothing in the box was moving. Nothing! The box was stuffed, wrapped, taped and wrapped and taped again. Everything arrived in perfect condition and we've already enjoyed part one of our thirteen part surprise. There's nothing like receiving fun stuff via postal. Email can bring the instant gratification of an instant message or email, but only postal mail brings me something tangible. SAP, muchas gracias!

Choose a letter of the alphabet. It's easy as D, E & F
1. Name three songs that begin with that letter of the alphabet.
Zero 7 Distractions, Boz Scaggs Dinah Flo, Carly Simon Do the Walls Come Down
2. Name three artists that begin with the next letter of the alphabet.
Elton John, Elvis Costello, Eurythmics
3. Name three albums that begin with the letter that follows the second letter.
Norah Jones Feels Like Home, Peter Frampton Frampton Comes Alive!, The Rolling Stones Forty Licks
Sorry I'm late. I spent the evening rendevousing with a friend, sipping an ice blended at my favorite coffeehouse, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf and playing catch up with the Desperate Houswives. I was too zonked to think last night, even when it had to do with music.

10 Things You Love About Your City...Alhambra, CA
~ It's a "bedroom community". I have to go out for a lot of entertainment, which is fine with me.
~ Every summer for nine or so weeks, we have live music by several bands during Summer Jubilee. It's all free!
~ Billboard signs/advertising are heavily regulated. We have a nice skyline with no eyesores.
~ We're centrally located to two major freeways and close to the mountains. The beach is thirty minutes away and we're centrally located to downtown L.A.
~ We have five parks in our 7.6 square miles of land.
~ We have an excellent police force and a reputation for folks not desiring to get stopped in our borders.
~ Fall and Winter we have free live music every Friday night.
~ Barking and party restrictions are strictly enforced with fines. We don't have any problems.
~ We have a great multiplex theater and a variety of cuisine.
~ We have a low crime rate.

I still haven't solved the wireless connection problem. I haven't felt much like doing so, either. Probably because I am the one who uses it most and I have a working system in the den, so it's not like I'm without the internet. Boo can also just as easily use the den connection. I'll work on it sometime this week, I'm sure. Right now, I'm into listening to and discovering new podcasts. I love it. There's so much to learn and discover that I never get bored.
The sun's axis is changing in my neck of the woods. I can tell by the afternoon sunshine. Autumn's lingering in the wing and I'm ready for it. Usually, the changing season can depress me because I need a lot of sunlight. But this year, I'm embracing and welcoming it. Please Lord, no more heavy rain!

Was a success! We had a good time and stuffed ourselves silly. It wasn't enough that Outback provided Emmet an ice cream sundae that everyone pitched in to eat. We still had to go to Coco's and buy a banana cream pie! Oh, Coco's has the best banana cream pie and it was so delicious. Of course, we abstained from devouring it until after we watched Diary of a Mad Black Woman.
DMBW was good, but not what I'd expected, especially after hearing such rave recommendations from several women at work. It had its funny moments, but mainly struck me as very heavy. Boo thought it too preachy and gospelly and preferred to be entertained, not preached to. DMBW has a message to all women about finding and knowing your self worth. About not losing yourself for anyone and letting go so that you can move on. Sometimes, you can cling to something/someone that's poisoning you and the poison simply spreads. It doesn't die, it simply conitnues infecting.
The film I found much more entertaining is Guess Who, about inter-racial dating and the reaction of the parents. Now this film was funny and able to touch on issues of race, without being overly confrontational and losing the audience. You know the adage, we're able to learn and absorb more through humor? Wow, it's true and Guess Who? correctly finds the balance while keeping the audience engaged. But I digress...
After DMBW, we ate pie, opened presents and listened to lots of R&B. What I found interesting is that no one - not one of us - wanted to discuss the film. It's like we needed a break from it. Instead we planned which football games we're attending in autumn and reminisced about which songs formed the tapestry of our elementary and junior high school years. Oh yes, we also had a few "I survived Catholic school" folks, who felt it necessary to share their foibles with us! LOL It seems more than two folks spent, ahem, time standing in the corner. Anyone relate?

The owners finally rewiring the electric meter and fuse box for moving outside. Right now, everything's inside the house and the electric company's always complained about having difficulty reading the meter. Why the owner's decided now, I'll never know. We've been here in excess of 7 years. The electrician arrived and proceeded to drill outside, preparing the wall for the new fuse box and two meters. All is good and we're merrily enjoying our day. I've turned off and disconnected all electrical devices, anticipating the power being turned off.
Without notice, the electrician and his helper were in the utility porch knocking holes in the wall! I asked him how many more holes did he plan on making and if the wall he was currently ruining would be the only one? He answered that he'd make a couple more holes and yes, this would be the sole wall affected. I don't know why, but the act of hearing the plaster crack and crumble to the floor was very upsetting to me. Granted, this isn't my house. I don't own it, so it's no skin off my nose, right? They finished phase one around 1:00 p.m. and went upstairs to start on Sissy's.
Meanwhile, we're cleaning house and getting ready to dine at Outback for Emmet's birthday celebration. Since I was ahead of the curb, I decided to reconnect all the electrical devices and was dismayed to find that the notebook wireless card no longer connects to the wireless router! @)($(^%$)W! Of all the unlucky breaks, this challenge just makes me bloody wonky! I've been troubleshooting off and on to no avail.
