Emmet's Birthday Celebration

Was a success! We had a good time and stuffed ourselves silly. It wasn't enough that Outback provided Emmet an ice cream sundae that everyone pitched in to eat. We still had to go to Coco's and buy a banana cream pie! Oh, Coco's has the best banana cream pie and it was so delicious. Of course, we abstained from devouring it until after we watched Diary of a Mad Black Woman.

DMBW was good, but not what I'd expected, especially after hearing such rave recommendations from several women at work. It had its funny moments, but mainly struck me as very heavy. Boo thought it too preachy and gospelly and preferred to be entertained, not preached to. DMBW has a message to all women about finding and knowing your self worth. About not losing yourself for anyone and letting go so that you can move on. Sometimes, you can cling to something/someone that's poisoning you and the poison simply spreads. It doesn't die, it simply conitnues infecting.

The film I found much more entertaining is Guess Who, about inter-racial dating and the reaction of the parents. Now this film was funny and able to touch on issues of race, without being overly confrontational and losing the audience. You know the adage, we're able to learn and absorb more through humor? Wow, it's true and Guess Who? correctly finds the balance while keeping the audience engaged. But I digress...

After DMBW, we ate pie, opened presents and listened to lots of R&B. What I found interesting is that no one - not one of us - wanted to discuss the film. It's like we needed a break from it. Instead we planned which football games we're attending in autumn and reminisced about which songs formed the tapestry of our elementary and junior high school years. Oh yes, we also had a few "I survived Catholic school" folks, who felt it necessary to share their foibles with us! LOL It seems more than two folks spent, ahem, time standing in the corner. Anyone relate?
